6/4/2015 - OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- A Republic of Korea Air Force chief master sergeant stationed at Osan Air Base tested positive for Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus at an off-base hospital June 3, 2015. He has shown no symptoms and is undergoing further testing.

Approximately 100 coworkers and visitors of the ROKAF service member during his hospital stay were also asked to remain at home to ensure the virus doesn't spread. There are no other diagnosed cases of MERS-CoV on base. 51st Medical Group officials assess the risk of exposure for MERS-CoV to be minimal to low as the infection only spreads through prolonged close contact with an infected individual.

"The virus spreads through close personal contact, such as caring for a MERS patient or sharing utensils and drink containers," said Col. Krystal Murphy, 51st Medical Group commander. "Therefore, we recommend everyone exercise caution and use good hygiene practices to prevent any further spread of MERS."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recommended hygiene precautions include washing hands regularly, especially before personal contact with the eyes, nose, mouth, or when eating or drinking, covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and avoiding personal contact with sick people.

The 51st Medical Group here established a care plan for the base and is working with U.S. and Korean public health officials to stay informed on any developing issues with the virus.

The MERS outbreak in the ROK, first reported May 20, has resulted in two reported deaths and the quarantine of over 1,300 individuals. In context, the Republic of Korea has over 51 million people.
