Experts Urge Calm Amid MERS Crisis
Signs of a panic are emerging as the spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome show no signs of abating. But experts urged calm on Wednesday, noting that the sphere of infections remains restricted to those who were either treated in or visited hospitals that tended to MERS patients.

A doctor who works at a major general hospital in Seoul was confirmed to have been infected with the deadly virus when he came into contact with the nation's 14th MERS patient in the hospital where he works. This is the first tertiary infection of a physician.

Another Korean who arrived here from Saudi Arabia is displaying symptoms, including a high fever, and has been placed in isolation. The number of tertiary infections has risen to four, and the total number of confirmed cases has risen to 35.

Some 1,364 suspected MERS carriers have been placed in isolation, while 544 schools across the nation have closed temporarily

The MERS outbreak has entered a new phase. Anyone can become a victim and spread the virus to others, and anyone displaying symptons must wear a mask and report to health officials.

Medical experts have advised people displaying potential symptoms to avoid contact with others and to stay away from crowded places. Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable and have been advised to stay indoors for the time being.

Doctor exposed more than 1,000 Seoul residents to MERS

A doctor confirmed of Middle East respiratory syndrome has reportedly come into direct and indirect contact with more than 1,000 Seoul residents, said a representative from the Seoul City government in an emergency press conference, raising speculation that the deadly virus has spread in to the community.

(Yonhap)

According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on Thursday, the 35th confirmed MERS patient, a doctor at a Seoul-based hospital, was found to have visited a large-scale conference to attend several meetings and symposiums in Seoul, despite instructions from authorities to quarantine himself, potentially exposing the more than 1,400 people in attendance.

“Concerns are growing as this means that the central control tower to combat MERS collapsed,” said an official from the municipal government.

Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon will hold an emergency press briefing at 10:30 p.m. at Seoul City Hall to announce countermeasures to cope with the fast-spreading virus.
