Israel is reporting bird flu deaths at a large farm in Hadera. It is likely H5 and may be Qinghai (clade 2.2) which is endemic in Egypt and was last reported in Israel in 2012 or may be H5N8 migrating through the Middle East. H5N8 has been confirmed in Europe, but it's presence in the Middle East and Africa (most notably Nigeria) remains to be determined.

H5 reported

H5N1 confirmed OIE

On Saturday morning it was discovered that turkeys in Moshav Aviel near Hadera had contracted avian influenza, a.k.a. “bird flu”.

This is an isolated coop which houses 100,000 birds.

The Ministry of Agriculture ordered the destruction and burial of all the turkeys so the virus doesn’t spread to neighboring farms. This is standard procedure in case of an outbreak.

The Ministry will also be conducting tests on bird coops within a 3 kilometer range of this infected coop to make sure the virus didn’t spread.

The last outbreak in Israel was in March 2012. The first was in 2006.

No humans in Israel have been infected with the virus so far.
