In Saxony-Anhalt two wild ducks have been discovered with the dangerous bird flu virus H5N8. The animals had been shot during the game monitoring on 31 December, the district of Stendal said on Wednesday. The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute (FLI) was detected at the two animals, the H5N8 virus. In early December was discovered dead on the Elbe near Aken in Anhalt-Bitterfeld, in Saxony-Anhalt an infected Mallard. The previously circulating H5N8 virus in East Asia dangerous emerged in Europe in November first in a Putenhof in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and later in several European countries.

So far, it is clear not clear whether the virus has come to wild birds or feed and poultry trade to Europe. The FLI had recommended a nationwide confinement of poultry in areas with a high density of wild birds or near wild bird resting places in November. This was due, inter alia, an infected wild duck on November 17 on the island of Rügen. Diseases of people who were exposed to the H5N8 subtype are not know until today. (Dpa)

So far, it is clear not clear whether the virus has come to wild birds or feed and poultry trade to Europe. The pathogen was first encountered in Korea. Migratory birds, which itself does not seem to suffer from them, could have brought the virus via Russia to Central Europe and transferred on animals in barns.

The FLI had nationwide in November a confinement of poultry recommended in regions with a high density of wild birds or near wild bird resting places. Reason for this was the discovery of a infected wild duck on November 17 on the island of Rügen . Diseases of people who were exposed to the H5N8 subtype, are not yet known.
