Tripoli, 29 December 2014:

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has held emergency meeting after five deaths from patients presenting with what appeared to be the symptoms of H1N1 or “Swine Flu”. Over the last week, ten people, four in Tobruk and six in Tripoli, checked into hospitals with severe pneumonia and what appeared to be the symptoms of H1N1 or “Swine Flu” .

In Tripoli, three of the patients were pregnant women in their 20s and 30s, while the other three cases included a man in his 40s and two men in their 30s. Two of the women have died, while one remains on a ventilator in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). One of the men in his 30s has died, and the other two remain in the ICU.

Of the four registered cases in Tobruk, all were men, including two brothers, aged 28 and 40. Two of the men have died, while two are still under observation.

The NCDC has stressed that the situation is “under control” and that H1N1 is in no way an epidemic in Libya. It did, however, call on hospitals to prepare for the possibility of an outbreak of the disease.
