Six private schools affected by influenza A H1N1
March 3, 2010

Radio America. Health Secretary Arturo Bendana confirmed that there are six private schools in Tegucigalpa in which influenza A/H1N1 cases have been reported.

Bendana said in recent days there have been 125 suspected cases of swine flu and of those nine have been confirmed.

Three of the schools affected by influenza A are the Pine Forest Academy, the American School, and the Dowal School, but the names of the other three are being withheld, because no cases have tested positive.

Health authorities have requested the temporary closure of the schools to prevent the spread of disease among students.

To date, nationwide, 645 cases have been confirmed at the national laboratory and 12 at private laboratories, according to Health.
[...]
Bendana will meet with a National Congress committee to work out the formation of an anti-pandemic team to respond to the increases in influenza A and classic dengue, which [classic dengue] has risen in the country by 200 percent, according to Health.

March 7, 2010

TEGUCIGALPA .- Influenza A-H1N1 has triggered panic in the capital's schools, to the point that Ministry of Health officials have closed three private institutions, while reporting 95% absenteeism in one public school.

The progressive increase of infections by the deadly virus has kept fearful the various public and private school populations in the capital, owing to the surge in severe flu-like illnesses.

Every schoolchild's sneeze becomes an alarm to classmates and teachers, quickly becoming an apparent sign of "swine flu", and symptoms also include fever and severe body aches.

Health Minister Arturo "Tuki" Bendana reported today that, recently, at least 20 cases have been reported in public hospitals and 29 in private hospitals. He announced that they are relying on 600,000 vaccines to immunize the country's vulnerable populations, mainly children, the elderly, health care personnel and those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases.

Second confirmed case of influenza this year in Honduras

Tegucigalpa, April 11 (Prensa Latina) Honduras health officials confirmed today a second infection with influenza A (H1N1) during the current year, but ruled out the possibility of an outbreak of influenza.

According to the Head of Epidemiological Surveillance of the Ministry of Health, Thomas Guevara, the most recent case was diagnosed in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula first and both are safe.

Guevara dismissed the idea of a new outbreak of the flu because, unlike previous years, there are now vaccines and the country is better prepared, he said.

However, recommended that people wash their hands with soap and water and avoid kissing during the greeting.

He also urged heads of schools and businesses to send people home with processes to avoid contracting influenza.

Since its appearance here in 2009, influenza A (H1N1) killed 18 people.

According to the World Health Organization, around the world flu left 18 people dead after detecting the first cases in April 2009 in Mexico.
