The Taney County Health Department was notified earlier this week that two Taney County teenagers have tested positive for having H1N1 Influenza A, commonly referred to as swine flu.

The cases are the first laboratory confirmed cases in Taney County. Health Department Administrator Jim Berry said he was not surprised to hear that there had been confirmed cases in Taney County, as the virus is in every state...

The two teenagers have recovered from the illness, Jean Mueller, public information officer with the health department, said. She added that by the time the lab tests results had come back, the youth had recovered. Test results can take several days.

KIRKSVILLE — Four cases of the H1N1 virus have been reported in Adair County, but Adair County Health Department Officials said all patients have recovered.

Only one case was reported in June, but three more were confirmed since then, department records say.

According to Lori Guffey, a registered nurse at the ADHD, no details could be given describing the severity of the cases or how the virus was contracted.

The H1-N1 virus complicates the start of a new school year in the capitol city.
The Jefferson City school district has three confirmed cases of Influenza “A” virus.
While those are not yet confirmed as H1-N1, the CDC said almost all Influenza "A" cases are later confirmed as H1-N1.
A school spokesperson said dozens of children went home ill today with 25 students coming from just one school.

State health officials have reported an increase in the number of flu-like illnesses, with emergency room treatment doubling ]in the last week.

Missouri hospitals reported four percent of patients being treated for flu-like illness in the last several days, up from less than two percent on normal days. In southeast Missouri, nearly 14 percent--or one in seven patients--were treated for similar cases.

... 47 percent of those being treated in hospital emergency rooms are children between the ages of five and 17.

Greene County health officials are concerned with a spike in cases of whooping cough.
Symptoms are similar to cold and flu -- low grade fever, runny nose, cough.

Kendra Williams with the Greene County Health Department says, "there are six cases in Greene County this year, compared to none in 2008. We've had indication from the state department of public health that they're seeing an increase all over so it's a trend that we'll see in this area and it's certainly something for us to watch for."

The disease can last for weeks, even months - and antibiotics are needed to treat it.

It's important to note that whooping cough has similar symptoms of the flu so I'm posting this here for imformative purposes. You never know who might have a sick child who's browsing for information and it's important to note that there are other viruses/diseases which could be mistaken for swine flu when in fact it could be something else which is serious like whooping cough, for example.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Missouri has recorded its second swine flu death, and the first in the western part of the state.

State health officials say a 24-year-old Independence woman died Wednesday night, several days after she was hospitalized with symptoms including diarrhea, coughing and extreme fatigue. Her name was not released.

The Department of Health and Senior Services announced the death on Thursday evening.

Swine flu blamed in girl's death

BY KIM BELL
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
09/26/2009

The mother of a teenager from north St. Louis County says her daughter died of swine flu, potentially the first death of a child in Missouri due to the illness. State and local health officials are investigating.

Asia Conley, 14, died at St. Louis Children's Hospital on Tuesday evening after days on a ventilator.

"The doctor said she tested positive for the swine flu," said Asia's mother, Kim Conley. "Four doctors told me that the inflammation was from the flu. They said it went up into her brain and gave her three strokes because it had blocked the arteries of her brain."

The Missouri Department of Health will investigate the death because it involves the suspected flu death of a child. The state must forward a report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Kit Wagar, spokesman for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

No child has died in Missouri from the swine flu, also called the H1N1 virus. Two adults who had H1N1 died this year in Missouri.

Asia suffered from seasonal asthma. She also underwent brain surgery two years ago to install a shunt for hydrocephalus, Kim Conley said.

A campus-wide email was sent last Friday on behalf of the Office of University Health, Wellness, and Counseling stating that a student at the University of Missouri - St. Louis had been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as Swine Flu. This is the first diagnosed case at the university although there have been documented cases at other universities and schools in the region, including the recent death of Hazelwood Central High School freshman, Asia Conley.
According to the email, the student diagnosed did not live on campus and "self isolated" before going into the wellness clinic to be tested for the virus.
