2 More Swine Flu-Related Deaths Reported in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - State health officials are reporting two swine flu-related deaths in the past week in Utah. The Utah Department of Health said Wednesday the deaths included two women between 50 and 64. That brings the number of deaths in Utah related to the H1N1 virus to 14 this year. The department also says there have been 520 hospitalizations associated with both the seasonal flu and swine flu this season.

The department says the current level of influenza activity and the number of hospitalizations is greater than unusual for this time of year.

Five more swine flu-related deaths reported in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - There is bad news in the Utah State Health Department's latest swine flu situation report, but there's good news as well. The bad news is there were five more deaths associated with swine flu reported since a week ago.

The good news is the effects of the swine flu have not worsened when it comes to hospitalizations which have held steady or declined slightly over the past two weeks.

One person, a woman between 50-64 years old died in Salt Lake County within the past week, with another two Salt Lake County victims who died before the health department submitted their report last Thursday. One of them was a woman between 25-49 years old and another was a man between 50-64 years old.

A Utah County woman older than 65 also passed away and a man between 25-49 died in the southeast part of the state.

One of the very first to die was in Utah. Young man. Went to hospital, sent home on Friday because it wasn't bad enough. Showed back up Saturday, coughing up blood, died Wednesday, when the condition was so horrific, the family agreed to unhook him from life support. The good old bleeding lungs, holy bejeepers, everything's bleeding thing, apparantly associated with D225G and the 1918 Second Wave. There were occasionally stories after that about Utah having a more deadly strain in the area. A higher lethality than average.

And if you click on Utah, and all the surrounding states, on Google Flu Trends, Utah had a wave in June when no one else did. Something special happened in Utah.

I live in Utah, everyone I know is sick right now including myself. I talked to my mom this morning, she lives about 200 miles from me, she was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics last week due to massive infection which began with, in her words, a head cold. She was not tested for H1N1 and neither was my dad who has had a hacking, dry cough and sinus problems for the last 2 weeks.

I work in retail, tons of shoppers in the last ten days and tons of sick calls. Everyone seems to have the same head cold/sinus problems developing into a chest cold or bronchitis and 3 people out this week with pneumonia. All day at work I hear sniffing, coughing and nose blowing from co-workers and shoppers alike but google flu trends doesn't seem to reflect any of my personal observations.

Since the beginning of the swine flu I have been paying a great deal of attention to people around me being sick because I work in retail. I feel more vulnerable being exposed to so many people everyday from so many different areas, and honestly I am seeing alot of sickness right now, more than any other time during the year. This is obviously just my opinnion, I don't have any science to back me up, but I think google flu is wrong on this one.

Very interesting, poke. Google flu trends is not an "official" source (though it is widely considered to be a valid source for flu tracking) but, because it and official - read, governmental - sources are not always trustworthy or accurate, anecdotal reports, IMO, are important and useful. Thanks for posting.

This is good. We need first hand accounts from people that either work or live in the area. Sorry to hear about your folks and yourself. It is flu season, however, and it is not stopping people from shopping. Thank you for your personal account.
Is there enough vaccine in Utah? I hope so. Looks like a bad winter.
