HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The State Health Department is reporting Hawaii's first flu-related death.

Officials say a four-year-old girl died Sunday. She tested positive for influenza and was prescribed Tamiflu by a doctor.

We don't know where the child was living or if anyone in her family was sick.

Unlike the rest of the country, Hawaii hasn't seen a widespread outbreak of the flu.

Doctors are still urging people to get their flu shots as soon as possible.

Influenza-associated deaths are considered pediatric in persons aged less than 18 years.
 Influenza-associated pediatric mortality has been a nationally notifiable condition since October 2004.
 All pediatric influenza-associated deaths are laboratory confirmed.
 Nationally, there were two influenza-associated pediatric deaths reported to CDC during week 1. One death was associated with an influenza A (H3) virus and the other was associated with and influenza A virus for which the subtype was not determined. The deaths occurred during week 52 (week ending December 29, 2012) and week 1 (week ending January 5, 2013). Total influenza-associated pediatric deaths for the 2012–13 season is currently 20.
 No flu-related pediatric deaths have been reported in Hawaii during the 2012–13 season.

Hawaii records first flu death in 4-year-old girl

Jan 23, 2013 12:17am

HONOLULU (AP) — Health officials say a 4-year-girl has died of the flu, marking this season's first death in Hawaii.

Shirley Cabasag told KHON-2 news (http://bit.ly/Ujrkr3) that her daughter Jianna asked for water and said she couldn't breathe before she died Sunday.

Cabasag says her family is devastated to lose the little girl, who was healthy one day and deathly ill the next.

Jianna was treated with Tamiflu twice after she had a fever on Friday, and had been vaccinated against the flu virus in October.

Cabasag says her daughter was sweating, her hands and feet were freezing and she was too tired to move before being rushed to the emergency room on Sunday.

Cabasag urges other parents to get the flu shot and be vigilant if children show signs of illness.

Shirley Cabasag clings to the photos of her daughter, Jianna.

"I feel empty. It's painful, it's not easy losing a baby," Cabasag said.

It all happened so fast, she says. Her four-year-old daughter -- the youngest of three sisters -- was healthy and happy one day, feverish with the flu the next day.

"Friday, she started to have fever so I took her to the doctor right away, and her doctor prescribed her Tamiflu because they suspect she has the flu," Cabasag said.

After the first dose, Jianna's fever went down, but only for a while.

"So, I believed the medicine was working. I said 'thank God,' but early afternoon Saturday she fell feverish again," Cabasag said.

She was given a second dose of Tamiflu, but on Sunday morning it got worse. She was sweating, her hands and feet freezing, and little Jianna was too exhausted to move. Cabasag rushed her to the Emergency Room.

"The last thing she told me, 'Mom I want to drink water,' but I can't give her because she had oxygen. The last thing she said, 'I cannot breathe.' She looked up at me and I [couldn't] do anything, and then the next thing they called code blue in there. Her heart stopped beating," Cabasag said.

Jianna passed away Sunday afternoon. This is the state's first flu death of the season.

"We really miss her so much," Cabasag said.

In October, Jianna got a flu shot. The vaccine is not 100 percent perfect, but Shirley is pleading for all parents to take the precaution.

"The flu shot should be updated. You always follow up with your doctor. All the vaccines and flu shot, that's important. But still you should really watch your kids. Even if they have all the vaccines and flu shots take it seriously," Cabasag said.

The message from doctors is that it doesn't matter that Hawaii's flu activity is low compared to the rest of the U.S.

The flu is here and the health risks are all too real.
