Officials at the University of Colorado in Boulder say eight students might have the swine flu and they're urging people to take precautions as more students, staff and faculty return for the new school year.

Officials say the students have tested positive for influenza A, of which swine flu is a substrain. University spokesman Bronson Hilliard says the school is treating the cases as though they are swine flu.

Officials suspected swine flu was responsible for an outbreak that caused about 20 percent of the school's students to stay home on Friday. Confirmation came today from the Colorado Department of Health, which conducted four random tests on students last week; three came back positive for H1N1, Cañon City School District Superintendent Robin Gooldy said Tuesday.

Flu-related hospitalizations on rise in Colorado

By The Associated Press
Published: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 8:35 AM MDT
COLORADO SPRINGS | The number of flu-related hospitalizations is on the rise and the official flu season is just beginning.

State health figures show that at least 171 people statewide were hospitalized with flu-related illnesses from Aug. 30 through Saturday. Most of those cases were thought to be the swine flu. Seasonal influenza tapers off in the spring and doesn't reappear until late fall.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recorded fewer than 40 flu-related hospitalizations the week ending Sept. 5. There were nearly twice as many the following week and about 60 last week.

Hospitalizations are the state's main indicator of the flu's occurrence, but they represent a small fraction of actual cases because most people don't seek treatment.

Health department: Boulder child died because of swine flu
The Denver Post
Posted: 09/23/2009 11:07:11 AM MDT

A child between age 10 and 17 died in Boulder this month because of the swine flu, but had other health conditions that could have played a part, according to the state health department.

A second person -- who lived in Denver and was about 50 -- died Monday, and more than 170 people have been hospitalized across the state, in an early and "extraordinary" start to the flu season that has doctors unsure about what to expect come winter.

The health department would not release the exact ages, gender or names of the patients who died, but both had other health conditions that might have caused them to succumb to the flu, said Dr. Ken Gershman, chief of the communicable disease program at the state Department of Public Health and Environment.

The two recent deaths bring the total in Colorado to three. The first reported death from H1N1 flu was a 41-year-old El Paso County woman, who died in July.

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (AP) - Health officials say A 13-year-old Breckenridge boy's death this week might have been related to swine flu.

Summit County public health officials and Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson say Bryan Pineda tested positive for Type A influenza last week. Most of those recent cases are thought to be swine flu, which is a strain of influenza A.

The state health department has reported that three Coloradans died this month because of swine flu. The other two were identified only as a child between 10 and 17 in Boulder and a person about 50 who died in Denver.

State health figures show that at least 171 people statewide were hospitalized with flu-related illnesses from Aug. 30 through Saturday. Most of those were thought to be swine flu.
