Swine Flu On The Rise In Central Florida

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Swine flu is making a strong comeback in Central Florida. WFTV heard about new cases and called the health department. They say 55 percent of reported flu cases this season in Orange County are swine flu.

Clinics like CentraCare are reporting a lot of cases of the flu, recently about 400 cases a week in Central Florida.

When swine flu hit, it hit like a hammer, and Gloria Figueroa remembers it well.

"Everyone was so sick. Everyone was scared," she told WFTV.

Last year, Orange County had 14 swine-flu related deaths, but this year doctors didn't expect to see much of it.

"It's really interesting that we're still seeing swine this season," said Dr. Timothy Hendrix, CentraCare.

Dr. Hendrix says the clinics are seeing 400 cases of flu a week, which is typical for peak season; but he says this year that peak is lasting much longer.

The Orange County Health Department says, of the cases reported in the last three weeks, 55-percent are swine flu. Just 27-percent are Type-A flu, which is typically thought of as the regular flu. (article continued)

A new report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows Florida among 36 states affected by the widespread flu symptoms.

Those flu symptoms have taken a toll on 1-year-old Lailany Garcia. The infant has had the flu for more than three days.

"I thought she was going to die in my arms," said Lailany's mother Crystal Figueroa. "Her lips turned blue. She couldn't look at me. She couldn't focus. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy."

Doctor James Orlowski, Chief of Pediatrics at University Community Hospital, said the infant had high fever that led to a seizure. He said what she experienced was not uncommon.

Dr. Orlowski said it is important to catch symptoms such as high fever, headache, muscle aches, cough and runny nose early to prevent the illness.

"The most important thing is the vaccination," Dr. Orlowski said. "Nothing does a better job than getting vaccinated against the flu."

According to the CDC report, the flu activity has increased throughout the United States from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5. Eleven flu-related deaths were reported.
