I appreciate it too. There is almost NO mention of flu in the Houston Chronicle. I entered flu as a search term, and looked at the recent results. Ironically, the only mention of the last FluView's report on the most recent flu activity in the southeast and NY was a short article in Spanish. Nothing at all on flu outbreaks elsewhere.

There was a bit on the television news about Kroger and the Salvation Army teaming up to give flu vouchers to low-income people without health insurance because the percentage vaccinated thus far has been low.

If it weren't for all the people keeping up with the situation and posting, and niman and others interpreting some of the details, I'd be in the dark.

CENTRAL FLORIDA -- There is a major outbreak of the flu in Central Florida and even doctors said they were astounded by the number of people getting sick. This week, doctors at Florida Hospital Centra Care saw 17 times their usual number of flu patients.

The flu is spreading and people are suffering and walk-in clinics like Centra Care have been busy.

"I had mine for about 10 days, body aches, headaches, sore throat, little bit of fever," said patient Natalie Diaz.

"At Centra Care we've seen a dramatic increase in the number of flu cases," Dr. Tim Hendrix of Centra Care said.

Dr. Hendrix said in early December, Centra Care was seeing about 20 flu cases a week, and the past 7 days they've seen 340 people with the flu.

"It's been a substantial increase. I'd say we're pretty much into an epidemic type of flu scenario now," Hendrix said.

That's why Hendrix said now is the time to get the flu shot even though it may take your body a week or two build up immunities after getting the shot.

Flu season could last another 10 weeks or more. This year it's hitting hard and a month earlier than typically seen in Central Florida.

Diaz said she wasn't surprised. She and her daughter have already been sick.

"I'm in a mommy's group. A lot of their kids are having it and it just keeps going through the families," Diaz said.

Doctors say using anti-viral medications like Tamiflu may help kick the flu, as long as you take it within 48 hours of feeling sick. After that, the drug isn't as effective and that's why getting to a doctor early is key.

"I never get the flu, because I get the flu shot every year," Central Florida resident Rosa Silverstein said.

Tamiflu is not cheap. WFTV called four local pharmacies to find out what each charge for 10 caplets. Walmart was the cheapest at $98. CVS charges $100. Walgreens charges $111, and Publix had the highest price at $119.

patients were hospitalized. One specimen was collected, and was rapid-test negative for influenza.

Hillsborough County: An SNF outbreak of respiratory illness. 53 total residents reported respiratory symptoms, primarily cough. Five
respiratory swabs from acutely ill patients were PCR-tested for influenza A &B, and other respiratory pathogens. One was PCR-positive
for Rhinovirus, the rest were PCR-negative for all pathogens.

Area Flu Cases Increase
January 19, 2011
Hospitals across the area are beginning to see an increase in flu cases.

During the second week of January, 158 patients were tested for flu-like symptoms by Sacred Heart Health System, with 14 percent receiving positive results for influenza.

“Many patients are not officially tested for flu when they have flu-like symptoms,” says Donna Mayne, Microbiology Lab Manager at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. “That means the actual number of people suffering from the influenza virus could be much greater than our percentages indicate.”

At Sacred Heart’s Urgent Care Center on Highway 29 in Pensacola, family medicine physician Dr. Fred Mixon has noticed an increase in patients presenting with flu-like symptoms. “In December we were seeing on average five patients a day with flu-like symptoms. In the past three weeks we have seen that number increase to eight to 10 patients a day.” says Dr. Mixon.

Week 2--Florida (January 9-January 15, 2011)

Week--%Positive for Influenza--%H1N1Positive--%Other
51-----51.0%--------------------14.0%---------80.0% Type A H3; 6.0% Type B
52-----59.0%--------------------20.3%---------66.7% Type A H3; 13.0% Type B

02-----62.8%--------------------13.6%---------45.8% Type A H3; 27.1% Type B; 13.5% Type A Unspecified

Florida is currently reporting Regional Influenza activity statewide. Statewide, influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is near the moderate threshold and above previous pandemic and non-pandemic influenza seasons at this time.

This week one county (Dixie) reported widespread activity, and fifteen counties reported moderate activity. Twenty-five counties reported increasing influenza activity. ILI reported in ESSENCE and ILINET is elevated above levels over previous years, especially in the southern and central regions.

In week 2 there were five influenza or ILI outbreaks reported into EpiCom:

Seminole County: A nursing home outbreak of influenza A. Three residents reported cough and congestion with no fever. Two residents were rapid-test positive for influenza A; results on the third resident are pending.
Hillsborough County: A skilled nursing facility (SNF) outbreak of influenza. 25 residents and 5 staff reported ILI symptoms. Four respiratory swabs from acutely ill patients were PCR-tested for influenza A &B. Two were positive for influenza A H3 and one was positive for influenza B.
Sarasota County: An influenza outbreak in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF). 18 residents and 11 staff reported ILI symptoms. Four swabs were collected and sent to DOH for PCR testing. All were positive for influenza A H3.
St. Johns County: An ILI outbreak at a nursing rehab facility. 33/107 residents reported ILI symptoms. 6 patients were tested for influenza. Two specimens were positive for influenza A unspecified, and two were positive for influenza B.
Palm Beach County: A resident with PCR-confirmed influenza A H3 in an SNF. 1/91 residents reported ILI. Note that by CDC definition, one positive influenza test in a long-term care facility can be considered an outbreak.
Citrus County: A skilled nursing facility (SNF) outbreak, in which 39/107 residents and 10/193 staff experienced ILI symptoms. Three patients were hospitalized. One specimen was collected, and was rapid-test negative for influenza.

Citrus county outbreak reported twice (also last week). Hillsborough county has had 2 outbreaks so far.

No pediatric influenza mortality was reported.

Sacred Heart Hospital is seeing a large increase in the number of flu cases and other upper respiratory illnesses treated at its Emergency Department and the Urgent Care Center on U.S. 29 in Pensacola.

The Emergency Department has seen record numbers of patients in the past week – more than 300 people per day.

At Sacred Heart Urgent Care, Medical Director Dr. Fred Mixon says the number of patients with flu-like symptoms has at least tripled from about five cases per day in December to 15-20 per day in the past week.

“Most people with flu-like symptoms do not need to go to the Emergency Department,” Mixon said in a news release. “I would encourage those who have flu symptoms – fever, chills, cough, sore throat and body aches – to contact their primary care physician if possible. Other health providers such as urgent care centers or community clinics will have shorter waiting times compared to an Emergency Department where patients may wait for several hours or longer to be treated.”

This year, most of the flu cases seen in the U.S. have been due to a Type A virus called H3N2, Sacred Heart spokesman Mike Burke said in a news release. This particularly virulent virus has been known to trigger more pneumonia and other complications than other forms of influenza. The 2010-11 seasonal flu vaccine does offer triple protection — against last year’s “swine flu” (Type A H1N1), the prevalent H3N2 strain, and the Type B flu that tends to be less severe.
