Health officials say at least 14 people have died from swine flu in Colorado this season, including six who were age 18 or younger.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said Wednesday that 691 people have been hospitalized with all strains of influenza, including 350 confirmed as swine flu or H1N1.
Up to seven Colorado schools are currently closed because of the flu. Maldonado says a total of 13 have been closed at some point, but some have reopened.
The six swine flu deaths among children 18 or younger is the most among any Colorado age group. Three other deaths were in the 25-49 group, three in the 50-64 group and two were 65 or older.

More details on the three most recents deaths posted by Faithful:

On Monday, 37-year-old Patrick Richard Montoya died at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver. The hospital says the father of five died from the flu and its complications.

Tuesday night, Montoya's friends and family had a candlelight vigil at his home. His family says his flu systems started on Oct. 4 and he died in the hospital seven days later.

"If you guys think you have the swine flu or even mild cold, you need to go in and get checked. We love him and we are missing him. This is unfair to all kids that he left behind," Desiree Montoya, Patrick's sister, said.

Montoya's family says he didn't have any other health problems. They say his symptoms included stomach cramps, dehydration and a high fever. His funeral is set for Wednesday.

Two more deaths were reported in Pueblo County. The two victims, 37-year-old Ronald Berumen and 21-year-old Jacqueline Romero, each had underlying health conditions, according to authorities. Berumen suffered from a seizure disorder while Romero was diabetic.

Berumen died in the emergency room of St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, while Romero passed away at home.

DENVER (AP) - Six more people have died from the flu in Colorado, bringing the total this season to 20, health officials said Wednesday.

It's not yet clear how many of the most recent deaths were from swine flu, also known as H1N1, and how many were from seasonal flu.

The six new deaths were reported to Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment last week. Officials posted the new totals online Wednesday but didn't immediately return a call.

The department doesn't disclose any information about the victims except their age range.

Officials said 183 more people were hospitalized with all types of flu last week, including 59 confirmed cases of swine flu.

That brings the total number of hospitalizations for all types of influenza to 1,058 since Aug. 30, including 578 confirmed swine flu cases.

More than 48 percent of those hospitalized with all types of flu in Colorado were 24 and younger, and seven of the 20 deaths were in that group.

Two Montezuma County deaths related to H1N1 were confirmed Monday by the Montezuma County Public Health Department. One resident, 51-year old Timothy Philo of Mancos, died at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango on Wednesday, and the other, also described as middle-aged but whose name was not provided, died at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction.

At least one of the men had underlying health issues, said Infection Control Specialist Marc Meyer of Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez, but he declined to specify further.

Lynn Westberg, executive director of the San Juan Basin Health Department, said La Plata County has had no confirmed H1N1 deaths, and the two from Montezuma County were the first cases she’s heard of in the five-county Southwest Colorado region.

DENVER—The number of new flu cases in Colorado has dropped for the third straight week, although four more deaths have been blamed on the virus.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said Wednesday a total of 38 people had died from the flu this season.

The department says people aged 25-49 account for 17 of the deaths, or nearly 45 percent.

Officials say virtually all the flu cases they have seen this season are swine flu or H1N1.

The department says 42 new hospitalizations were reported last week. Officials say that will rise as late reports trickle in, but it's still expected to be lower than the 132 reported the week before.

The number of new hospitalizations has been declining since 333 were reported for the week of Oct. 11-

State health officials say about 30 people were hospitalized for the flu last week, although that number is expected to rise as late reports trickle in.

The number of new cases has declined since the week of Oct. 11, when 339 were reported.

Seven new deaths from the flu were reported last week, bringing the total to 45 for the season. The 25-49 age group has been hardest hit, with 19 deaths.

Health officials say virtually all the influenza cases they have seen in Colorado this season are swine flu, also called the H1N1 virus.

A total of about 1,770 people have been hospitalized with the flu this season.
