Fatality: (old news?)
A 26-year old Martha's Vineyard resident who died August 14 is the first confirmed H1N1-related death on the Island, and the 11th death in Massachusetts, according to state public health officials.
Canisters at several local stores ask for donations to transport Mr. Barbosa's body back to Brazil for burial.
The man, Elton Barbosa of Oak Bluffs, died at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after he was transported off the Island earlier last week. He was a native of Brazil and worked on the Island as a painter, according to several acquaintances...

Massachusetts public health officials say a 55-year-old woman with a number of health conditions has become the 12th person in the state to die after contracting swine flu.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced the death Friday but did not disclose the name of the woman, who lived in Middlesex County.
In a statement, the department said the woman had "had multiple underlying health conditions."

Raynham - Swine flu has arrived in Raynham.

Two students, and a possible third student, at LaLiberte Elementary School have been confirmed with the swine flu.

A trio of third-grade teachers at the school also went home with flu-like symptoms Tuesday. Several other students are being looked at as possible flu victims.

The first cases of the H1Ni flu virus, or swine flu, was confirmed at Silver Lake district schools.

A student at Halifax Elementary was diagnosed with the virus Oct. 28, the same day, a child in the preschool program at Silver Lake High School was also diagnosed.
Both children are expected to fully recover.
Although this is the first confirmed case at the high school, Principal Richard Kelley said he expects the virus to spread. He sent a letter to parents this week explaining what staff members are doing in response.
“If we don’t have 20 more cases I don’t know about I’d be surprised,” he said Friday.
Kelley was visiting schools in the western part of the state earlier this week and said many of those schools have been struck hard by H1N1.
“In Shelburne Falls 60 percent of the faculty and students have been absent,” he said.
Kelley does not expect to close the high school due to the flu.

WEYMOUTH — A Catholic elementary school in Weymouth was open today even though 40 percent of the students were out sick Tuesday.

About 10 percent of the students continue to be absent at the six public schools in Hingham, and absenteeism was reported higher than normal in Scituate, too. The cause most frequently cited: flu-life symptoms.

At St. Francis Xavier School in Weymouth, about 160 of the 397 students were absent Tuesday, said the principal, Sister Teresa Vesey. The school has children from kindergarten through 8th grade.

In a letter to parents posted on the school Web site, school nurse Lisa Stieb said there are a number of “influenza-like illness cases,” with several physician-confirmed cases of H1N1, or swine flu. She urged parents to keep sick children at home.

Boston Reports First H1N1 Death This Fall

A 65-year-old Boston man is the first death linked to 2009 H1N1 influenza, also known as swine flu, in Boston this fall, the Boston Public Health Commission said on Tuesday.

The unidentified patient, who had multiple underlying health conditions, was hospitalized Oct. 14. He tested positive for Influenza Type A and died Oct. 31.

Boston health officials were notified Nov. 9 that state laboratory test results came back positive for H1N1.

The patient's death is the fifth attributed to H1N1 influenza in Boston and the 14th in Massachusetts since the pandemic began in the spring.

H1N1 Flu Cases On Rise In Mass.

http://www.thebostonchannel.com/health/ ... etail.html

Normally the flu season doesn't really start until January in New England but emergency rooms like the one at the Boston Medical Center are already getting swamped and there's a lot of concern that as people travel and get together with family members next week for Thanksgiving things may only get worse.

According to the Boston Herald, health officials are starting to see some pretty alarming numbers.

-So far this fall, the number of flu cases is about 75 percent higher than the past two winter flu seasons.

About 7 percent of people seeking treatment at the ER are complaining of flu-like symptoms which compares to less than 1percent at this time last year.

That's taking a toll on hospital workers. One hospital reported that a third of its nurses are out with the flu.'

Two more Massachusetts residents have died form complications related to the H1N1 virus, health officials said Friday.

The deaths of a child under the age of 4 from Middlesex County and an adult aged 49 to 64 from Suffolk County have both been blamed on the virus, health officials said.

The two most recent deaths bring the total number of deaths blamed on the virus this fall to five statewide, and 17 for the entire H1N1 outbreak of 2009.
