The flu continues to hit Kentucky hard. More school systems closed on Tuesday as more counties reported confirmed cases.

The state says the outbreak of the the H1N1 virus is far from over. There have been 20 new cases in Fayette County alone.

The Kentucky Public Health laboratory has confirmed that the death of a 41 year old female on September 21 in Louisville was caused by lung disease related to the H1N1 virus.
There were no apparent underlying medical conditions in the patient. This is Louisville’s first death from H1N1...

There was also a death in a Fayette County female in her 50s earlier this year who had significant underlying medical conditions. The Kentucky Department for Public Health is also investigating the case of a teen from Caldwell County whose death may have been H1N1 related.

A spokesman for Louisville's mayor says a 41-year-old woman who died late last month had swine flu.

Mayoral spokesman Chris Poynter said Friday that lab results indicated the woman had the H1N1 virus. Poynter says the woman appeared to have no other health problems.

It's the second reported swine flu death in Kentucky. The first fatality was a Fayette County woman in her 50s who officials said had "significant underlying health conditions."

Health officials also are trying to determine whether swine flu contributed to a recent death in western Kentucky.

H1N1 Louisville Victim Identified

By Katherine J. Shepherd

Posted: Oct 4, 2009 1:45 PM

Metro health officials have confirmed that a 41-year-old woman died from the H1N1 virus.

Metro Public Health and Wellness Director Dr. Adewale Troutman said the woman died from lung disease, likely pneumonia, related to the H1N1 virus.

The Jefferson County coroner's office identified the woman as Sheila Brooks of Louisville.

Brooks was pronounced dead in the Emergency Room of University Hospital on Sept. 21st.

According to Deputy Coroner Eddie Robinson, test results from an autopsy performed on Sept. 22 confirmed Brooks had H1N1.

Federal privacy laws prevented health officials from releasing whether Brooks received medical treatment or for how long.

While this is the first H1N1-related death in Louisville, there have been others in Kentucky. A woman in her 50's died in Fayette County earlier this year. She also had significant underlying medical problems.

Health officials are also investigating the death of a teen in Caldwell County.

Ky. Reports Two More Swine Flu Deaths

Last Update: 2:40 pm
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Officials in Kentucky have reported two additional deaths this year related to the H1N1 virus, also known as the swine flu.

The Kentucky Department for Public Health, the Pennyrile District Health Department and the Christian County Health Department announced that cases involve a Caldwell County teenager and a woman in her late 20s.

The teenager did not have health issues while the woman had underlying health issues, according to officials.

“Influenza always has the potential to cause serious illness or complications that can result in hospitalization, and even death. It is a tragedy when we lose Kentuckians to any illness, especially children and young adults," said William Hacker, M.D., commissioner of DPH. "Kentucky continues to experience widespread flu activity at the moment, and is working with federal, state and local partners in the public and private sectors to prepare for the 2009 H1N1 vaccination campaign. Flu vaccine is one of the most effective tools we have against influenza and we hope to begin immunizing Kentuckians in the weeks ahead."

Kentucky reported its first swine-flu related death in early September. That case involved a Fayette County woman in her late 50s. The state's second swine-flu related death involved a Jefferson County woman in her 40s.

The news comes the same day millions of swine flu vaccines are being released nationwide.

"Although we are continuing to see an increased number of cases of the flu, to date the illness H1N1 causes is comparable to seasonal flu and will usually not require the closure of schools for public health reasons," said Dr. Hacker.

Officials are still investigating another possible Kentucky death related to the H1N1 Virus.
UK Medical Center officials told the Fayette County Coroner's Office of a possible death in Lexington.
At this time very little information is being released about the person.
What we do know is state officials are running tests to see if it is related to H1N1.
