A very large wave of influenza in Poland / Shutterstock

Only during the week came 80 000 patients with influenza. Chief Sanitary Inspector warns that the wave of cases is growing. This season is worse than the previous.
Friday 2013-01-04

In Poland we have a very large wave of cases of influenza-like illness and infections. According to the Chief Sanitary Inspector, in the last week of December reported 80,000 such cases.

Jan Bondar, GIS spokesman said that hundreds of people requiring hospital treatment because of this. - Severe complications during the flu is pneumonia or myocarditis - he stressed. He added that the current situation is not unusual, but there are a lot of patients and clinics are overcrowded.

Bondar also noted that the incidence may be even more. Usually, during the Christmas disease is less when not working and remain at home, but this year is different. In his view, there are still a growing trend. Most patients with influenza-like illness and infection is in Mazovia, Pomerania and Galicia. Peak influenza recorded in our country from January to March.

We are to blame suffering from the flu, I do not szczepimy against the disease - as Professor Lidia Brydak, an expert of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the field of influenza, comments about the incidence of infections grypodobne or suspected flu.

Professor Brydak emphasizes that Poles tend to be vaccinated against influenza. Last year we were on the penultimate place in Europe when it comes to consumption of vaccines. However, it is known that vaccination is an effective method of prevention. Expert notes that should be warm in winter dress. However, as pointed out in the streets of Warsaw can meet people without hats, scarves, warm coats and jackets only.

Report of death from swine flu in Poland 'not true' says hospital

04.01.2013 08:51

Update2 – A hospital in southern Poland has said that the swine flu virus “was not the direct cause” of the death of a 50 year-old man on Friday.

Spokeswoman at the hospital in Bielsko-Biala, Jolanta Trojanowska, said reports that the man died from contracting the AH1N1 virus, as reported by the RMF FM radio station, were incorrect.

She said that though the man had tested positive for the virus, this was not the direct cause of his death as he was suffering from other diseases as well.

“He was very sick,” Trojanowska said.

She added that 16 people have been diagnosed with having the AH1N1 virus at the hospital - one of them being a medical employee.

Janusz Baczewski, director at a hospital in the town of Sucha Beskidzka, also in southern Poland, says two patients diagnosed with the virus are in a “serious but stable condition” in the intensive care unit.

Spokesman for Poland’s Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, Jan Bondar, has told Polish Radio that the AH1N1 virus is a "normal seasonal flu", which "can be potentially dangerous, especially to the elderly [...] and those with asthma or cardiovascular disease".

In 2009, 172 people died from swine flu in Poland. (pg)

Swine flu death toll. Another victim of the virus

In Krakow, died two people who confirmed the presence of H1N1 virus. This is another case of deaths due to flu complications. The virus has attacked dozens of people in Silesia, in the regions of West and Warmia-Mazury.

Photo. Luke Cynalewski / Newspaper Agency

- Dead people visited the University Hospital. Had severe underlying disease, were joined by H1N1 flu infection, and the result was tragic. Both men were about 50 years old - says Elizabeth Sykut of the Regional Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Krakow.

Are you ill? Check where the nearest clinic

The third case in Galicia, was recorded in Nowy Targ. - In this case we do not have confirmation that it was the H1N1 flu because the material was not sent for testing, but most likely it was the flu or flu-like infection. This is indicated by epidemiological and clinical evidence - Sykut adds.

The Hospital District Sucha Beskidzka four patients hospitalized with severe pneumonia, three patients were confirmed infected with H1N1.

Death toll in Silesia

For Saturdays in Silesia had been 26 cases of swine flu. The worst situation is in the hospital in Bielsko-Biala, where dangerous virus was detected in 16 people. Have also confirmed two cases of death due to swine flu.

The Bielski hospital is still a few patients in the ICU. There is also a group of several people with suspected H1N1 virus.

Hospitals in Silesia, who died just two people who have been confirmed infected with the virus. One patient went in a serious condition to the hospital on Christmas Eve in Cieszyn. Doctors immediately put her in intensive care. A woman died as a result of complications from influenza, flu caused by the H1N1 virus

Dangerous virus was also detected in the patient, who died a few days ago the provincial hospital in Bielsko-Biala. He went to the hospital in poor condition after a heart attack and complications associated with influenza were not the direct cause of death.

At the hospital in Bielsko-Biala, as well as in the institution in Sucha Beskidzka in Galicia due to the increasing incidence of the flu on Thursday, restrictions were introduced when it comes to visiting the sick.

In Bielsko-Biala has been suspended until further notice, and Sucha Beskidzka limited. Do not put there children under 12 and elderly patients, visitors, who have not been vaccinated against the flu, and people with symptoms of a viral infection fresh.

H1N1 in other provinces

Two cases of swine flu were also seen in hospitals in Szczecin. In a state hard hit under the care of doctors man, in a patient woman's disease is milder. Therefore, patients received standard procedure, the isolation and limit contact with others

Head of Warmia and Mazury sanepidu Dzisko Janusz said that in this province in the country had the highest incidence rate of influenza. Mostly sick children. One person study showed H1N1 virus.

Weak flu prevention

Every year die due to influenza in Poland a few hundred people. According to the World Health Organization, we are in the forefront infamous States with the lowest ratio of preventive examinations in the world in the direction of AH1N1 virus.

Last year, in Poland only 125 surveys were carried out, during which the infection was detected in eight people. For comparison, in France in 1165 conducted studies detected 18 cases of H1N1. In Canada, 4176, where he also found 18 infected.

Tests for influenza can be performed in the so-called. sanepidzie or your GP, who after taking a swab from the throat send material for testing for the presence of antigens. According to scientists H1N1 virus is no more dangerous than regular seasonal flu.

Protect against the flu vaccine. Unfortunately, the current period is no longer the best in the vaccination, as these should be performed prior to the flu, a person should be healthy and not exposed to contact with infected persons.

However, as pointed out in an interview with Elizabeth Sykut ONET, the biggest problem is the prevention of flu in Poland. And a lack of it.

- Examine very little. In general, the diagnosis is microbiological monitoring and diagnostic shortcoming in Poland. I do not have the habit to examine all, even the most patient and designated for research - Dr. Sykut ends of the Regional Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Krakow.

How to fight the flu?

While the severity of influenza frequently wash your hands with soap under running water, avoid contact with sick people. If you have flu-like symptoms should stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids, use a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. If it is necessary to being away from home sufferers should avoid crowds and mass gatherings.

It is recommended to also covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a tissue, and possibly hands, which then should be washed with soap and water.

Influenza is an acute infectious disease caused by various strains of influenza virus. Moving germ is carried by droplets when coughing, sneezing, talking, etc. It manifests itself mainly high fever, chills, headache and muscle pain, a feeling of malaise and weakness, runny nose, dry cough and sore throat.

The disease usually resolves spontaneously after 3-7 days, but coughing, fatigue and malaise may persist for about 2 weeks. Influenza can lead to serious complications, even life-threatening, especially for those at risk. These include the elderly, over 65 years of age, chronic illness, such as respiratory diseases, vascular diseases and diabetes mellitus, transplant, and HIV-infected children under two years of age and pregnant women.

The Board of Health did not expect orders to perform so many tests.

- We do, however, all that the situation was back to normal - says Andrzej Trybusz, Provincial Sanitary Inspector.
explained that ordering more tests on the stock, does not make sense, because they have a short shelf-life.

Fortunately, hospitals can outsource the tests in other, regional sanitary stations.
