The man died at Onassio Hospital where he had been receiving treatment for a serious heart condition from early August, NET said. A 58-year-old woman suffering from diabetes and serious kidney problems was yesterday transfered to the intensive care unit of an Athens hospital after being diagnosed with swine flu. The woman is the eighth person to be admitted to an ICU after contracting the H1N1 virus. Last Sunday, a 23-year-old heart patient died of complications linked to swine flu. More than 1,800 cases of H1N1 have been recorded in Greece with around 60 percent of them visitors from abroad, according to the Health Ministry.

Municipalities and prefectures throughout Greece will join the battle against the H1N1 virus, said the Health Minister after his meeting with the reps of local governments. On Friday, Dimitris Avramopoulos will introduce the national action plan to the Prime Minister and then will send it to the political leaders and the President of the Republic. Prevention, primary care and intensive treatment are the key pillars of the action plan. In the meantime, the government’s planning keeps attracting opposition fires. The H1N1 infections that have been confirmed in Greece have soared to 730, with the two most serious cases being in a critical condition.

A FRENCH holidaymaker, aged 29, on Tuesday became the first person in Greece to die directly as a result of H1N1 flu, the Greek health ministry said.
In a statement, it said the man succumbed to lung-failure complications in an Athens hospital after he came down with the A(H1N1) virus - adding that he was 'the first death' exclusively as a result of the illness.

The Kathimerini newspaper reported she was transferred to the intensive-care unit of an Athens hospital with serious respiratory problems, having tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

"The New Zealand tourist brings the number of serious cases of swine flu recorded in Greece to 15 with just one death linked exclusively to the virus," the newspaper reports.

Greece has just reported its first swine flu infection in a child, a Thessaloniki schoolgirl aged 16 who was treated at a hospital in the northern city.
