Man in Croatia dies of swine flu despite having been vaccinated against it

ZAGREB, Croatia -A Croatian doctor says a 46-year-old man has died of swine flu even though he had been vaccinated against it.
Dr. Ante Beus, head of the Infective Disease Clinic in Zagreb, says the man — the country's third flu fatality this season did not respond to the vaccine he received a month ago.
People should develop immunity after two weeks.

Beus said Wednesday that the man, who died this week, was obese and had diabetes and several other illnesses, which might have prevented vaccine from working. Doctors are studying the case.

Croatian health authorities urge people to get the shots, but many are reluctant.

More than 20 people died last year in Croatia during the global swine flu outbreak. About 1,000 are believed to be infected now.

Some 40,000 people have been infected with swine flu and 10 have died from complications resulting from the disease so far this season, the daily Jutarnji List writes.

The majority of those suffering from complications have pneumonia.

But the mortality rate this season is lower than expected, and the same as last year. Worldwide, some 20,000 people have died from swine flu, with the world averages at around 50,000 people during the flu season. In other words, for every 200,000 affected, one person dies from complications.

Rumours have started to circulate in Croatia that "something is wrong" with the vaccine which seems to be less effective than expected. Two of this year’s swine flue victims had received shots, the daily writes.

Croatia ordered some 650,000 doses of the vaccination, spending 30 million kunas (4.043 million Euros).
