The young Aurélien Ferrier, who died last September 13th in Saint-Etienne in the Loire is one of two cases in France mutation of influenza virus H1N1. This information was revealed Friday by the INVS (Institut de Veille Sanitaire) together with three Norwegian cases.

"The virologists will be sensitive to this change, we will analyze again all serious cases. "Notes Professor Bruno Pozzetto, head of the Laboratory of Virology, CHU Saint-Etienne, who learned this news, three days ago.

The young man of 26 years died the day after his hospitalization, September 12, the emergency so sudden and somewhat unexplained. We understand better now why he presented the famous white lung. This syndrome is so named because, on the radio, the lower lung is white. In fact, the influenza virus had mutated, giving him the ability to invade the lower part of the body where it can grow more easily.

The H1N1 pandemic virus, in its classic form, is less invasive and generally confined to the upper respiratory tract, thereby limiting the damage. This mutation occurs randomly and mostly within the organization. This could mean that the mutant form is not contagious, at least for now.

Nobody can predict "the probability that the wild virus emerges and takes precedence over the existing one. Alas, when it occurs, thanks to its ability to infect lung cells and destroy them, it causes a fatal respiratory failure.

No need to panic, tempers virologist: "All the carriers of mutated virus will not, necessarily, a severe form of influenza, although the probability is increased. But the situation warrants, he said a mass vaccination.

"This vaccine is a miracle of technology, a safe and effective. We had the chance to benefit in a short timeframe, do not sulk. In addition, it is the only way to prevent virus circulation and thus mutate. "

To date, there are nearly eight thousand deaths worldwide due to influenza H1N1. The week just passed has jumped by more than 85% of deaths in Europe alone.

Everywhere in France, the vaccination centers are experiencing overheating in recent days. The queues lengthen and the doors close sometimes two hours before the scheduled time to stop the flow and catch up.

President Sarkozy calls for opening more centers and also to widen the beaches open. This will he succeed in mobilizing more medical staff and paramedics.

Hundreds of internal medicine, occupational physicians and doctors from the Department of Health will be armed and used in immunization clinics starting next Wednesday, according to the Elysee.

"Beaches Opening centers have expanded this week, especially on Wednesdays, Saturdays and early evening," the statement said.
