Nearly 100 Swiss Army recruits near St Gallen contracted varied forms of the flu over the weekend, with six confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu.

Sixty-six recruits were admitted to a military hospital; 35 of them are still there as of today.

Results from further screenings for the H1N1 virus will be known by tomorrow.

The recruits were segregated from other patients, though the Ministry of Defense said in a statement such flu epidemics are not uncommon for this time of year.

The flu begins to crack in Switzerland. For the first time since the start of the winter, the epidemic threshold has been exceeded, the website said the BAG Wednesday. The virus mainly affects young children. It has not yet spread to the northern townships of the country.

During the last two weeks, doctors have identified 8.7 cases of influenza per 1000 consultations. Extrapolated to the entire population, this rate is 79 consultations per 100,000 due to the virus population. The epidemic threshold (72 consultations per 100,000 inhabitants) is thus slightly exceeded.

General upward trend

Children under 4 years are most affected. About 100,000 inhabitants, the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) is estimated to 136 the number of visits of toddlers to the doctor. For seniors over 65, this rate is 17 doctor visits. However, doctors are for all age groups tended to increase.

Several townships are still untouched by the flu or Aarau, Solothurn, both Bales, Zurich, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, St Gallen and Appenzell both. The influenza surveillance in Switzerland is provided by 200 medical offices that fall each week the number of patients with influenza illness.

Alexander Legkov withdrew from Tour de Ski after the sprint in Toblach where he finished 20th. Legkov got fever the night before the A to B stage from Cortina to Toblach and left for Davos.

Legkov was taken to hospital in Davos for a medical check up. "I felt worse and worse in the car. In Davos they did all the tests right away and diagnosed swine flu," said Legkov in an interview on skirun.ru. He confirmed that change for the worse was very rapid. "When I was at the X-ray check up two guys had to support me as I had no power in the legs," explained Legkov in the interview.

Legkov is feeling much better now. After an intensive treatment his temperature dropped to 36.8 but he still stays in the hospital in Davos. It remains unknown where he caught the virus. "Perhaps in Oberhof. We stayed at a huge hotel with many people. In the top shape where I was the immunity is weaker and it is always on the edge with health. I was in a very good shape," explained Legkov.

Legkov is supposed to leave for Russia to recover well before the next training camp, which the Russian team will carry out again in Davos. "I must prepare for the World Championships in Oslo. I want to be in top shape again in battles with Dario, Petter, Markus and Lukas," optimistically concluded Legkov.

Flu continues to plague Switzerland

The flu epidemic picked up steam in Switzerland last week, federal health officials said on Wednesday.

The number of cases rose to 33 from 25 cases per 1,000 people from the previous week, according to the latest figures.

Officials say children aged five to 14 are most affected.

About four out of five cases of the illness have been confirmed as a type of the H1N1 virus, or swine flu.
