Expectant mums across Northern Ireland are being urged to get the flu vaccination after three pregnant women were diagnosed with swine flu.

The Public Health Agency (PHA) has said three cases of the H1N1 virus have been confirmed and women must ensure they are protected against the potentially lethal condition.

Two men have died from swine flu at the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Both men, who were from Oldham, had underlying health conditions. Their deaths are the first from the virus in the region this winter.

Alan Higgins, Oldham’s director of public health, said: "It is with regret that NHS Oldham confirms that two people have died at the Royal Oldham Hospital, with swine flu as a part of the cause.

"They both had serious underlying illness. No further details will be released to protect patient confidentiality and we would ask the media to respect the family’s privacy at this very difficult time."

Health bosses are now urging pensioners, pregnant women and other vulnerable people to be vaccinated after a poor uptake of the jab. For the first time this year the jab combines the swine flu and seasonal flu vaccine.

In the north west, just 28 per cent of vulnerable people – pregnant women and those with respiratory and immune conditions – have had the vaccine while only half of over-65s have had it.

Last year there were fears that the global swine flu pandemic could claim 65,000 lives across Britain.

In the end 457 people died, 44 in the north west.

Hugh Lamont, from the Health Protection Agency, said: "The average healthy person will take any strain of flu in their stride.

"However, there are many cases – particularly with pregnant women – which can be much more serious than that.

"Flu is not something that can be taken lightly and every year we do see some deaths. If you feel you are entitled to a free flu jab on the NHS, you should consult your family doctor for advice."

Another death, the bell is starting to toll. I feel as though I'm on my own. I've warned everyone I possibly know and they're starting to give me funny looks :banghead: . Personally, I don't care, they can think what they like. Ignorant fools..

Stephenson. Sadly I do think you have problems. Your compulsive posting of google flu related stories being a good example. People die every flu season from ari related events. The statistics prove we are way down on ari deaths relative to most previous flu seasons. You are a classic Niman convert and you will be scared for a long time to come. Great way to live your life. You get funny looks for a good reason and need to understand people ultimately are responsible for themselves. Let it go before it seriously damages you and those close to you. Leave saving the world to Niman who gets payed for it.

Excuse me, cpg but I can think for myself. I don't know why you hang around here. I have numerous news sources, Google being just one of many. I have a fascination and keen interest in influenza and it's evolution. Sticks n' stones and all that. Move along pls.
