Not doubting the report, but intuitively wouldn't you expect the early outbreaks to be in the south if swine is now following the seasonal flu pattern?

Good observation, something I have been thinking about.

The ILI activity, by state and territory is showing local or regional for NT, hard to make out the shades.

I was thinking that this could be due to a couple of reasons.

Either the virus not reaching the more remote or less dense areas last year in Australia, or increased transmission from closely neighbouring South East Asian countries that have had outbreaks recently.

Late July and early August have seen the biggest Influenza peaks for Australia in the past. From US reports pandemic H1N1 didn't fall into a seasonal trend as the peak was in October.

From memory Cairns in far north Queensland had an outbreak around the same as Victoria in the south took off last year, but it was earlier.
