There are no 2010 sequences. Although quite a few HA and NA sequences have been released, I believe the most recent was collected in September, 2009.

Thanks.

When all this is over, I wonder how we'll look back on the world's testing and surveillance measures.

The Influenza A(H1N1) pandemic has shown signs of a resurgence, with an average of 50 cases a week in the past three weeks compared to 20 cases per week in January and February, said Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai.

There were 12,688 cases reported so far this year, he said in a statement.

He said 380 patients with Influenza-like Illness (ILI) were still being treated in hospitals nationwide but the death toll remained at 77.

"Throughout the week, 10 ILI clusters have been reported in Kelantan, Perak, Kedah, Selangor and Malacca," he said.

Schools affected for now

As the clusters involved mostly schools, Liow advised students and their parents to practice preventive measures and seek early treatment should they experience ILI symptoms.

Liow said in a Bernama report that H1N1 vaccinations were available for those in the high-risk groups such as pregnant women, patients with kidney problems and those with chronic diseases.

He added that vaccination can be obtained from 104 health facilities.

In total, during the last week (21 March to 27 March 2010) there was a decrease in the number of new cases with symptoms of Influenza-Like Illness (Inclusion) treated at the hospital of 320 patients compared to 350 cases in the previous week (a decrease of 8.6%) . Inclusion in the remaining cases are still being treated across the country on the last day of Epid Week 12/2010 (March 27, 2010) is of 371 cases (a decrease of 3.6% compared to the previous week) in 38 government hospitals and private hospitals 7. Of these, 25 patients or 6.7% were cases of Influenza A (H1N1) is confirmed by laboratory tests made outstanding cases until March 27, 2010, a total of 12.620. The number of cases treated in the ICU is comprised of 11 compared to 8 cases in the previous week. Six patients treated in ICU are risk factors. No new death cases of H1N1 and the total cumulative mortality remains 77 to date.

There were six incidents were reported over the inclusion of the cluster last week. An incident at the Sime Darby Plantation Merlimau Estate Melaka (involving 16 employees), of the Madrasah Tahfiz Muslihin Masjid Tanah Melaka Raudatul (31 students), one of IKM Jasin Melaka (7 students), one in the House of Orphans Vidyalaya Kuala Kubu Bharu Selangor ( 9), a Religious School Rantau Abang Dungun Terengganu (5 students) and one in Hospital Serdang Selangor (15 employees). Each event cluster is a positive influenza A (H1N1).

Ministry of Health also wishes to clarify that according to the monitoring of incident clinical cases of influenza A (H1N1) and the inclusion of the cluster occurred, yet there are signs of the occurrence of the second wave. However, the risk or the possibility of a second wave still available for Malaysians in general are still vulnerable ("susceptible") against the infection. Inclusion of cluster events that has occurred continuously shows the spread of influenza A (H1N1) in the country are still active even under control. Therefore, people are urged to remain vigilant to keep a healthy lifestyle and personal hygiene, get early treatment and do not neglect preventive measures Influenza A (H1N1), which was announced earlier. Community can help by reporting incidents to cluster near the District Health Office. In addition, immunization as well as H1N1 is now open to the public and are available in health facilities that have been identified. Complete information on government health facilities are available on the website or http://h1n1.moh.gov.my http://www.moh.gov.my. Given the limited supply of vaccine, the vaccine made an approach, first come, first serve.

Internationally, the spread of influenza A (H1N1) is still active, especially in Southeast Asia, West Africa and East Africa and temperate countries in the Northern Hemisphere such as Europe and South East, South and East Asia. As of March 21, 2010, the number of deaths due to influenza A (H1N1) in the world is more than 16.931 cases, an increase of 118 cases (0.7%) compared with the previous week.

Thank you.

TAN SRI DATO 'SERI DR. HJ. MOHD. ISMAIL BIN Merican
Director General of Health

There are pictures at the link. Interesting, the husband/father was in Perak at the time of the deaths, also an area with a cluster. Maimunah Dimah, his wife, was not a well woman. The number of pregnant women dying just keeps climbing.

MALACCA: Mah Nor Mah Nasir was hoping for a new beginning when he moved into a house in Jalan Jasin, Merlimau, a week ago. Instead, he lost his wife and daughter within days.

This was the heart-wrenching fate Mah Nor, 65, faced when health complications related to the Influenza A(H1N1) virus claimed the lives of Maimunah Dimah, 54, on March 31 and Surmani Mah Nor, 29, on Friday.

“I was away visiting my son in Perak when I received a call that my wife was ill in hospital,” said Mah Nor.

“I rushed home immediately, only to learn that Maimunah had passed away,” he said at his home here yesterday.

Still reeling from the loss of his wife, Mah Nor was delivered another blow when his 36-week pregnant daughter also succumbed to complications on April 2.

Surmani had slipped into a coma following a Caesarean section at the Malacca Hospital on March 29 to save her unborn child.

Mah Nor was informed by health authorities here that Maimunah had died of kidney failure while Surmani succumbed to lung complications.

Mah Nor, who stopped work as a gardener a month ago to care for Maimunah when her right leg had to be amputated due to diabetes, said he did not expect to lose his wife and daughter within a week.

“They were fine when I left for Perak on March 18.”

Mah Nor’s newborn grandchild, a baby girl, is fine and in stable condition.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam urged members of the public not to panic as health authorities here were monitoring the situation closely.

A (H1N1): 40 confirmed hit by the flu in Johor
By FARIK ZOLKEPLI

JOHOR BARU: A total of 40 patients in Johor have been confirmed positive for A (H1N1) virus this year.

State Health department director Dr Mohd Khairi Yaakub said that all the cases, which were recorded in the first three months this year, were transmitted locally and no deaths were reported.

“All the infected patients have been quarantined.

“These patients are being treated at the respective hospitals in the state,” he said adding that, the state recorded a total of 704 positive cases were recorded last year.

Dr Mohd Khairi, who was speaking to newsmen after attending the launch of the 1Malaysia Clinic in Taman Megah Ria here, said the department was continually conducting checks at various checkpoints in the state to prevent the virus from spreading.

He also reminded the people to take precautionary measures such as going for medical check-up when experiencing coughing or flu and wearing masks.

“The people must not be complacent by thinking that the virus is not around anymore.

“They must always be on their guard to prevent infection or spread of the virus,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also announced that the state had already recorded 691 dengue cases this year, resulting in three deaths.

“Two of the patients died in Segamat while another in Kota Tinggi.

“It is a serious matter and thus, the people must play their part in curbing the spread of dengue,” he said.

He added that the people must ensure the cleanliness of their homes or premises to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes

Don't Treat H1N1 Lightly Although Second Wave Has Not Struck

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 (Bernama) -- The second wave of the influenza A (H1N1) has not occurred in Malaysia yet, but it does not mean that the people can treat the matter lightly, reminded Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said individuals suffering from fever, cough or cold or showing symptoms of the H1N1 were advised to seek treatment, and members of the public were encouraged to take preventive measures such as wearing masks in public places.

"At present, there are still small clusters reported...they (H1N1) have not spread to the people and the situation is of course under control.

"I wish to emphasise, this is not the second wave of the H1N1, but signs of an increase are there and we wish to remind the public to be prepared to face the second wave," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here on Monday.

As of last Saturday, the total number of fatalities due to the H1N1 was reported at 79 people.

I think I have the location correct. Article also talks about dengue- how the cases are quite high this year.

SIBU: Minister of Public Health and Environment Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh confirmed two persons, including a child, were suspected to be infected with H1N1 in Sibu this week. When contacted, he said the condition of the sick adult had improved and been discharged from the hospital while the child had been admitted to the isolation ward.

Wong, who is also the Second Finance Minister, did not identify who the two sick persons were, but said their blood samples had been sent for analysis.

“The situation of the viral spread is not alarming in Sibu now, but, I want the people to work together to contain the spread.”

He said they should continue to watch over personal and environmental hygiene, and if family members were down with symptoms similar with those of H1N1, they should take them for treatment immediately.

Wong has earlier told reporters that there were 84 cases of H1N1 in Sibu in the first three months of this year.

He also revealed then that Kuching had the most cases with 252 cases.

Officals must be getting worried if they are issuing daily updates.

http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/ ... n1/Article

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Effective today, the Health Ministry will issue statements every day to update Malaysians on the influenza A (H1N1) situation in the country.

This, according to Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, was because of the increasing trend of influenza-like illness (ILI) and H1N1 cases reported in big clusters daily nationwide.

An increasing trend of new cases were reported in Selangor, Pahang, Kedah, and Malacca

Disclosing the new cases reported on Tuesday, Liow said four pupils of SJK (C) Han Mong in Batu 14, Puchong, Selangor have been found positive for H1N1.

The pupils were among 12 from the same school who were taken to a hospital when they showed symptoms of the disease.

"The pupils who were treated for ILI were also tested for H1N1 and four of them were found positive for the disease," said Liow.

They were among 220 schoolchildren in Selangor, Pahang and Kedah who were taken to hospitals after they showed ILI symptoms on Tuesday.

Liow said they were awaiting laboratory results to ascertain whether the pupils from six other schools were positive for H1N1.

The pupils who were treated as outpatients for ILI till 10pm on Tuesday were:

- SM Sains Pekan, Pahang (32);

- SM Sains Kuala Selangor, Selangor (15);

- SJK (C) Chung Hwa, Kuah, Langkawi (46);

- MRSM Langkawi (17); and,

- SRK Bayas, Langkawi (54).

Liow said they were in close contact with Education Ministry officials on the matter.

Until 5.30pm on Monday, said Liow, there were 507 people warded in 47 government and 12 private hospitals nationwide with ILI.

Of the number, he added, 36 of them have been confirmed positive for H1N1. Four of them are being treated in the intensive care unit of hospitals in Kelantan, Selangor and here for complications due to co-morbid conditions.
