In the wake of two devastating typhoons in the span of a week, the Philippines Department of Health (DOH) is concerned about the possibilities of outbreaks of respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases in evacuation centers.
Specifically, the DOH Undersecretary Dr. Eric Tayag said Wednesday, the concern is about an outbreak of H1N1 influenza.
Respiratory infections are a serious concern in evacuation centers where overcrowded conditions exist.
Tayag said DOH personnel would get swabs from those suffering from upper respiratory illness to be tested.
In addition to respiratory illnesses in crowded evacuation centers, the massive flooding that Typhoon Pedring left behind opens the door for a plethora of infectious diseases, among them, leptospirosis, diarrheal diseases and dysentery and typhoid fever.
