A/H1N1 has become the predominant strain of flu virus in China, but is unlikely to have as great impact as it did in 2009, reported the Health News on Thursday, a newspaper run by the Health Ministry.

After nearly half-a-year with no severe cases of A/H1N1 flu reported, the virus has started to take its toll again in the last two months.

China has reported 129 severe cases of A/H1N1 since the end of 2010, after 18 straight weeks without any reports of severe cases since August 2010. Twenty deaths caused by A/H1N1 were reported as of Tuesday since the beginning of 2011.

A weekly report by the Chinese National Influenza Center showed that A/H1N1 had become the predominant flu strain since the end of 2010. Previously, influenza A (H3N2) virus predominated.

Shu Yuelong, director of the center, was quoted in Health News, as saying that as China entered the peak influenza season, more acute cases of A/H1N1 would occur, but the pandemic would not be as severe as that in 2009.

Shu said, current monitoring results showed that both the percentage of flu-like cases in outpatient and emergency visits and confirmed cases of influenza were lower than the level in the same period last year.

He said that vaccination against A/H1N1 had been effective.

The A/H1N1 flu outbreak peaked in terms of severity in 2009. The Chinese mainland reported its first case in May of that year. More than 120,000 A/H1N1 flu cases were recorded in 2009, with 648 of them leading to death.

LOCAL entry-exit quarantine authorities found four people with A-H1N1 influenza on a Liberian cargo ship last week. The ship, as well as the affected crew, has left the city, officials said yesterday.

On Thursday, the Waigao-qiao Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau received a report saying that three crew members on the cargo ship "Northern Juvenile" were suffering from fever and a cough, typical A-H1N1 symptoms. As soon as the ship docked, bureau officials boarded and checked crew members' temperatures.

Officials found that another member, who had close -contact with the ill men, also had a high fever. The four were sent to Pudong Infectious Disease Hospital for further tests and diagnosis.

Doctors suggested the patients be quarantined, and the four were sent back to the ship where they were held in isolation. The ship left the city the next day.

On Saturday, the Shanghai Center for Disease Control confirmed that the four crew members had A-H1N1. The bureau informed the ship at once, warning them to take measures to prevent the disease from spreading further.

Local health officials said the A-H1N1 situation is stable in Shanghai and the number of cases continues to fall.

"We received few patients seriously affected by swine flu recently and there have been no deaths so far," said Dr Lu Hongzhou, vice president of the Shanghai Public Health Center.

The Health Bureau of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) confirmed on Thursday a 47-year-old female patient infected with the A/H1N1 flu virus died this morning, the first death case related to the influenza in Macao.

The patient developed flu symptoms, such as cough and fever, on Jan. 14 and was admitted into hospital on Jan. 18. Her condition deteriorated the next day and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, where she was tested positive for A/H1N1 flu virus.

The patient, who had never been inoculated with A/H1N1 flu vaccine or seasonal flu vaccine, was announced dead Thursday morning.

According to the Health Bureau, the patient's son and sister also developed flu symptoms but recovered soon.

CHANGSHA, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Health authorities in Hunan said Thursday that A/H1N1 caused six deaths in the central Chinese province in February, four more than that of January.

The province reported 124 flu A/H1N1 cases, up 129.63 percent from last month, according to a spokesman with the Health Department of Hunan Province.

The deaths happened in the cities of Zhuzhou, Hengyang, Yueyang, Huaihua and capital Changsha.

In January, Hunan reported two A/H1N1 deaths.

The A/H1N1 flu virus has started to take its toll again and has recently become the predominant strain of flu in China. A-H1N1 patient died of electrocution in hospital_4

Police in east China's Hangzhou City confirmed Friday that electrocution was the cause of the accidental death of an A/H1N1 flu patient in a hospital on Wednesday. The patient died of electrocution caused by leakage of electricity from electrical circuits in her ward lavatory, when she was taking a shower, said a statement jointly released by the public security, health and quality supervision departments. The patient was identified as a 34-year-old woman named Lou Yihong, who was admitted on June 23 to the People's Hospital, in Xiaoshan District, after being diagnosed with A/H1N1 flu. Police said an autopsy was carried out on her body. She was found dead in her ward lavatory by a nurse at 7:35 a.m. Wednesday. The patient had been recovering and her temperature had measured normal for a week before her death. She had coughed occasionally, but other flu symptoms had disappeared, according to the Hangzhou municipal health bureau. More than 50 of the patient's relatives protested at the hospital from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday, damaging the inside of the buildings and an ambulance with rocks. Glass in the hall and a flower terrace in front of the hospital were damaged. A TingVoa.com reporter saw Lou's relatives go into closed-door talks with official, told TingVoa.com that the hospital would properly handle the aftermath of the accident, and negotiate with the patient's relatives over the compensation issue. Some newspapers and Internet media reported the relatives suspected Lou's death was caused by leakage of electricity from the water heater in her ward lavatory, and demanded compensation of 4 million yuan (585,000 U.S. dollars) from the hospital. But the sources failed to get a direct quote from Lou's relatives.
