Whats going in China?

"Since January, the Influenza B virus has replaced the H1N1 strain as the dominant flu virus in most parts of the Chinese mainland, including Beijing, He Xiong, deputy director of the Beijing Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), told China Daily yesterday."

Pandemic H1N1 has already displaced it once. Probably could/will again.

Just seems strange to claim that swine flu has been pushed aside, unlike the rest of the world.

It has happened globally. There is virtually zero other influenzas around since the fall. Pandemic H1N1 has pushed seasonal flu out of the picture and probably into extinction. However in recent reports out of China there appears to be some signs of Influenza B.

A/H1N1 Influenza Still A Long-term Threat
March 12, 2010

BEIJING, March 12 (Bernama) -- People with chronic diseases, the obese, and pregnant women face a renewed threat of contracting deadly infection of A/H1N1 influenza as spring draws near, reports Xinhua news agency on Friday.

Severe and fatal cases peaked in early and mid December last year, and have been dropping gradually since, but the disease threatened a resurgence as the weather warmed up, senior epidemilogists have warned.

"A new outbreak of A/H1N1 influenza is possible during this winter-spring season, and especially in the southern areas during summer," said Shu Yuelong, director of the Chinese National Influenza Center, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Health, at a meeting.

Cases of patients with chronic diseases, pregnant women and obese people were much more likely to become severe or even fatal.

Pathogenic studies showed a very small chance of the A/H1N1 virus mutating during this winter and spring, so vaccination was still essential to prevent potential outbreaks.

Analyses of past flu outbreaks showed a pandemic usually lasted more than two years before turning into seasonal flu, said Shu.

"So the A/H1N1 influenza might be prevalent in the world for a considerably long time."

Experts said the government should promote vaccinations for high-risk groups, people in rural areas and migrant workers in urban areas.

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 35,000 pregnant women and 37,000 children aged six months to three years had been inoculated with the A/H1N1 flu vaccine and no severe adverse reactions had been reported.

As of March 7, the Chinese mainland had reported a total of 127,427 cases of A/H1N1 flu, of which 8,320 were severe and 796 people had died.

China reports 7 A/H1N1 flu deaths in March

Quote:
BEIJING - Seven new deaths from A/H1N1 influenza was reported on the Chinese mainland last month, bringing the death toll of the flu to 800, according to the latest report of the Ministry of Health.

The report posted on the website of the ministry late Friday said 429 people were confirmed to be infected with A/H1N1 flu in March, 70 of whom were hospitalized.

The figures marked a noticeable decline compared with the previous month when 18 deaths were reported and 856 cases were confirmed.

The report said a mass infection was not possible currently, but it did not rule out the possibility in the upcoming summer.

The country had been continuing its efforts of inoculation, the report said. According to a separate report of the ministry, more than 94 million people had been vaccinated against the flu as of Thursday.

Taiwan doesn't seem to have it's own thread so I posted here.

Taipei, May 8 (CNA) A 15-year old junior high school student died of influenza A (H1N1) three days ago at a northern Taiwan medical center, the first such case in Taiwan in three months, health authorities said Saturday.

The new death puts the total number of H1N1 fatalities in Taiwan at 42, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the Department of Health.

The centers said the girl developed a cough, sore throat and bellyache April 27, but only sought medical attention at a local clinic a week later when she began suffering tachypnoea.

On May 4, the patient was transferred to a regional medical center for treatment for tachpynoea and vomiting and was unconscious. The doctors tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) , but she died the next day due to kidney failure. She had a record of diabetes, the CDC said.

Taiwan has recorded a total of 922 H1N1 cases since July 2009, and 80 percent of those who died had records of cardiovascular, liver, or kidney disease or other disorders, the CDC said. Forty-one of those who died had not been vaccinated against H1N1, it said.

Taiwan has touted its success in fighting against H1N1 with a national immunization program under which 25 percent of its total population has been immunized. (By Chen Li-ting & Bear Lee) Enditem/ pc

MACAO, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The Health Bureau of Macao Monday said that it has recorded five cases of flu infections at a local creche.

The five patients were children, aged between four and five, at the same class of the creche, and they have developed flu symptoms such as fever and coughing, according to the Bureau. All the young patients have received medical treatments and none of them needed to be admitted into the hospital.

The Bureau also said that they have collected medical samples of the patients for further tests and has ordered the creche in question to implement strict sterilization and flu prevention measures.

The previous such collective outbreak at a local professional school, 15 cases reported, has been confirmed to be not caused by the A/H1N1 virus, according to the Bureau. So what was it?
