Russia records first swine flu death: medic
MOSCOW (AFP) – A doctor recently arrived from Bulgaria died after contracting swine flu, becoming Russia's first fatality from the A(H1N1) virus, a Russian medical sciences' academy official said on Sunday.
"The day before she died, her tests were handed over to our group, and we immediately diagnosed it as swine flu," Dmitry Lvov was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
"We could not take any measures because she died the very next day," Lvov said, adding that the death happened "in early September."
Lvov also warned that the total count of people infected with the virus could be much higher than the 90 Russia had acknowledged so far.
"By my count, it can be as high as tens of thousands. I cannot prove it as yet, but in a few weeks I will be able to and will say so," Lvov said...

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, November 2 (RIA Novosti) - The number of people confirmed as having the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, in Russia's Far East Kamchatka Territory has grown to 54, local health ministry spokesman said.

"Thirty seven children and 17 adults have been confirmed as having swine flu in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Elizovsky district," the spokesman said, adding 32 people had light infections and 22 were in a moderately grave condition. Thirty five people were hospitalized, he said.

"We have enough medicine and places in hospitals," the spokesman added.

The first case of swine flu infection was registered in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on October 21, three days after an infected 11-year-old boy was hospitalized.

Five deaths from the H1N1 virus have been so far registered in Russia. Three fatalities were reported in the east Siberian city of Chita, one in Moscow, and another one in the Siberian Krasnoyarsk region. The total number of officially confirmed swine flu cases in the country has reached almost 1,900.

Russia's chief sanitary official, Gennady Onishchenko, earlier said the swine flu cases began growing considerably in October, traditionally the time for a seasonal flu outbreak. The country plans to start a swine flu vaccination program in December.

The death toll of the swine flu pandemic in Russia has risen to at least 10, the country's consumer rights watchdog said on its website on Tuesday.
"Russia has so far registered 10 deaths from the pandemic H1N1 virus, complicated by pneumonia, among people aged 20-53, including eight in the Trans-Baikal Territory, one in Moscow and another one - in the Krasnoyarsk Territory," Rospotrebnadzor said.
According to the agency, all diseased patients were late to report their illnesses as they sought medical attention 3-5 days after feeling the first symptoms of the disease, when the swine flu virus had already led to complications in the form of pneumonia and toxic shock.
The most threatening situation with swine flu has been monitored in Russia's Far East, Siberia and Moscow, Rospotrebnadzor said.

Nine cases of the H1N1 flu virus have been registered at the St. Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation, the Russian Consumer Watchdog told Interfax on Monday. "A hotbed of sickness is developing in the university," the spokesperon said.

Two other cases of swine flu have been reported in local institutions of higher education. A fourth-year student at the Shtiglitz Academy of Applied and Industrial Arts fell ill on October 20 and was hospitalized two days later with H1N1, said Valentina Badanina, who manages the university clinic. A second-year student at Bonch-Bruevich University is also sick with the virus, Badanina confirmed.

Both individuals' close contacts have been examined, but their institutions remain open to students. The University of Civil Aviation, meanwhile, has been quarantined with classes cancelled until November 12.

He indicated that the woman felt ill in the nighttime of October 15, then stayed at home for four days trying to cure herself, turned to medical assistance on the fifth day, October 19, and was hospitalized immediately.

The official quoted his counterparts at Moscow City’s Department for Public Health as saying her test sample for establish the H1N1 flu was sent to the Central Institute for Epidemics Research.

“The woman had attending diseases like grade two hypertension, the coronary heart disease, obesity, and a high blood glucose,” he said.

The official indicated that all the four people who have died of the H1N1 flu began with self-medication and turned to doctors too late.
