CUMBERLAND, Maine — The Cumberland County Fair is kicking off for the 140th year.

The fair in Cumberland gets under way Sunday and runs through Oct. 1.

It’s the largest agricultural event in the county, known for its agricultural exhibits, pig scrambles, giant pumpkin-growing contest and harness racing.

There’s also music, plenty of food, carnival rides and livestock events.

This year there will also be lawnmower races.

Note that the fair ended Oct 1 and the above video is of the scamble on Oct 1. That is six days prior to disease onset for the first case in Maine and three weeks prior to disease onset for the second case.

Typical influenza incubation period is 2 days, with a range of 1-4 days.

The two cases in Maine illustrate the power of suggestion and heavily biased testing.
These two cases had a milder flu, as do many others in Maine. However, since these had a swine "exposure" they went to the Dr and were tested even though the dates of the exposure were off. Once one case was positive, the other was tested even though the fair had ended weeks earlier.

Thus, the swine "exposure' drove the testing even though the exposure was too early to have caused the infections.

The agriculture department is testing symptomatic swine. First set of testing was negative. More results expected at end of this week.

This pig scramble looks like a lot of fun. Thanks for the amusing link.

If this is a full blown flu pandemic then I say we need more of them. This strain seems very mild and has really curtailed H1N1. Got to be a good thing.
