Quick comment on Contagion - the movie.

It was a recombinant between bat and swine virus and sequence / phylogentic analysis led to the vaccine.

More to come on similarities with H1N1 AND trH3N2.

My quick take on Contagion was accurate for the first half, but clearly faded in the second half. The spread was too quick initially, and too slow subsequently. The self administration of a vaccine and subsequent challenge via exposure didn't make much sense, especially since the the monkey had already survived (and the challenge was too soon after vaccination).

The main theme of a recombinant due to urban expanion was / is quite possible, and the filming and story in general were quite believable and gripping.

Atlanta hospital reports more Bird Flu tests due to ‘Contagion’

Maybe test for trH3N2?

Quote:

WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta reported yesterday to Atlanta’s WSB-TV that it’s had an increase in Bird Flu test requests because the movie Contagion is raising fears about contracting the disease. Contagion is an action-thriller currently playing Atlanta theaters that stars Lawrence Fishburne, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet and Jude Law. The film centers on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the major outbreak.

According to the CDC in Atlanta, Avian influenza, more commonly known as Bird Flu, has rarely crossed the species barrier to infect humans. On its website, the CDC states this about Bird Flu…

HPAI H5N1 has caused the largest number of detected cases of severe disease and death in humans. However, it is possible that those cases in the most severely ill people are more likely to be diagnosed and reported, while milder cases are less likely to be detected and reported.

Avian influenza cannot be diagnosed by symptoms alone, so a lab test is required. Avian influenza is usually diagnosed by collecting a swab from the nose or throat during the first few days of illness. The risk of Bird Flu spreading in the United States is very low right now, so Atlanta families should not be concerned.

Just back from the movie contagion... pretty good! At times I thought I was on the flu board! Many of the scenes reminded me of discussions that have happened here. This board was probably resourced for the script. Did a decent job of covering the issues that go along with a pandemic. Some of the music was a bit weird though.

Dr. Niman....think the character played by Elliot Gould was loosely based on you? :)

I haven't seen it, but I have to now! :D

As far as Kennestone having more "requests" for Bird flu tests... somebody needs to alert them to the fact that they don't test for Bird Flu (in the human population) in a country that became one of the number one exporters of Broiler chickens secondary to Bird flu being found in other major exporting countries... (Just sayin')

You gotta go BIG time to test for that here.... You might can test for it, but you cannot offically report it without going through the U.S.D.A. (good luck there.)

I've seen it twice. I thought they did a good job of characterizing the social unrest that would occur in a serious pandemic. It wouldn't even have to be deadly for that to occur. It would just have to make a quarter of the truckers, train engineers, and ship captains sick at any given time for a couple of months. Also, it made me realize that in such a crisis we'd be pretty much on our own. With nurses going on strike and both nurses and doctors getting sick, it would probably be a waste of time to go to an ER. It appears that England was very close to the breaking point in December/January.
