Hello Wotan...

What is the timeframe difference between the statistics in your comment of 114 pm, 1:16pm, 1:18pm and 1:20pm... are they references to 3 separate "flu seasons" of weeks 40 - 20? ThankYou.

They are the mortality data for the "current" week (which is actually last week), the previous week (which I take from the MMWR thread I created for the prior week's data), the same week for last year (hence it was week 4 of 2009), and this time I threw in week 4 of 2008, to give a little extra comparison between what is going on now versus the same time in non-pandemic years.

H1N1 seems to be gaining strength, and will be well positioned for a breakout around week 18, to borrow some wall street jargon. Any ideas about what natural selection might produce for us this spring?

I actually got an email back from CDPH regarding the 6 deaths in California. The person who sent me the email Gloria Navarez, said she wanted to know where the info came from so she could verify it. I told her and said that if it was CDC, they should have a link to that and also if we had 6 children die, CDPH should know if it was last week or what week it was reported in.
If we have six children die in one week, that is huge so be aware as no one knows what is going on and people are really letting their guard down.
At least I got an email from a real person, too bad she did not know how to figure it out. I did tell her it was from the Week 4 MMWR report. No comprehension, I guess.
I wlll see if I get a response.

MS death is likely the 14F who died at childrens hospital in Memphis, but the Memphis death (12M) is not included in the above.

Comments: Pediatric Mortality in California MMWR this weekFriday, February 5, 2010 11:16 A

I believe there is a misunderstanding. On the weekly report submitted for Week 4, only one severe pediatric influenza fatality was reported. What may have happened is that due to delays in reporting, CDC reported these 6 deaths, which occurred weeks prior, until week 4.

It would be concerning if such high number of pediatric influenza fatality cases had been reported, but this is not the case.

I hope this was of assistance.

Feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions.

As you can see the email from CDPH was returned and there were not 6 deaths this past week. They are from who knows when, it is when CDC shows them.

Just wanted to show that I do contact the right people and do get an answer.
I am impressed by our Public Health in California. I think most Public Health in the US are doing the best they can. However, California, has a bizillion budget cuts, so it is nice to see someone cares.
