Israel had confirmed an H5N1 outbreak in poultry. Over the summer, the Fujian strain (clade 2.3.2) was identified in wild birds in the Uves Lake region (Mongolia and Russia). In the past H5N1 in Uvs Lake migrated to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, raising concerns that the Fujian strain would follow suit.

The H5N1 outbeak in Israel may signal the arrival of the Fujian strain, which has never been reported in humans, wild birds, or poultry outside of Asia.

Affected Population The farm has three poultry houses that contain 43,000 heavy breeder pullets aged 16 weeks. These poultry houses are in a farm under extremely high biosecurity. Clinical signs occurred in only one house.

The Health Ministry said Tuesday that the strain of bird flu discovered earlier would not infect humans. The Ministry said that it had taken steps to protect workers dealing with culling the infected birds, and that in previous incidents of bird flu no humans had been affected.
