Donestk is starting to close schools again. The oblast has the largets number of fatalities (162), which almost doubled the number at the end of 2009 (91), even thoough the number of cases this month only increased by less than 75,000 (from 329,218 to 403,306). Thus, in 2009 the number dead was just of 1 in 4000 reported cases, but in January it is almost 1 in 1000. A four fold increase in fatality rates signals an increase in D225G/N, which could get very bad very quickly as the number of cases increases.

I find it odd that the WHO would release theie statement a few days before the release of 30 samples by Mill Hill. How likely is it that the WHO already knew about these 30 sequences before the news release about D225 changes?

Mill Hill is a WHO regional center. The samples were collected in October through mid-November. The data is only new to public. I am sure WHO was well aware of these sequences when they wrote their head pat on D225G and putting that paper our BEFORE the Ukraine sequences was no accident/coincidence.
The D225G was a PR paper, no science required.

WHO is a hazard to world health. I know they play the political game but this is just crazy. They know what we know today two weeks or more ago. Yet they downplay the seriousness of 225.

The world is calling Swine flu a hoax and cancelling vaccine ( that probably wont work well anyway ) orders as fast as they can.

WHO needs to be real about this and cause a bit of public panic so at least people can be prepared somewhat. I hate how the powers that be treat us like fools. I know most of the public is ignorant but I doubt they are all fools.

Time to up the ante WHO. If it all turns out to be OK then at least you had the data behind you. 29/30 225 mutation. Thats bad.

Is there any information of the change in efficacy of the vaccines with fatal RBD changes(225). Of the different manufacturers is there any study showing the efficacy and other data that gives a view to prophylaxis or other data ?

The nasal spray has D225G. The shots do not.

It's very unfortunate that human beings do not learn from history, ie the 1918 pandemic. Complacency can be a killer.

The history is quite precise. It is somewaht symbolic that the first 2010 H1N1 sequence has D225G. From the 1918 pandmeic there is one 1919 sequence, which also has D225G. In 1918-1919 there was the same conversion. Although the number of HA sequences is limited, the 1918 sequences had more D225, which then switched to D225G, which was i late 1918 and early 1919 sequences.
