One was also Tamiflu resistant

In a statement, the Institute suggests "Reference of mutations in the genome of influenza virus A-H1N1" from these two people who had no relationship and were hospitalized in two different cities. InVS was that for one of these patients, in addition to this mutation, another known mutation that is resistant to Tamiflu, the drug used to treat people infected with the virus.

Two die in France after mutated swine flu infection

From correspondents in Paris

Agence France-Presse

November 28, 2009 03:33am

TWO patients who were infected by a swine flu mutation that was also
recently detected in Norway have died in France, health officials say.
"This mutation could increase the ability of the virus to affect the
respiratory tracts and, in particular, the lung tissue," a statement from
the French government's Health Surveillance Institute (InVS) said today.

"For one of these patients, this mutation was accompanied by another
mutation known to confer resistance to oseltamivir," it added, referring
to the main drug being used to treat swine flu, under the brand name
Tamiflu.

The case was the first drug-resistant strain found in France among the
1200 strains experts have analysed here, the InVS said, adding that "the
effectiveness of vaccines currently available is not being questioned".

The two patients were not related and had been taken to hospital in two
different cities in France, it said.

The death toll in mainland France now stood at 76, the InVS statement said.

The World Health Organisation said yesterday it was investigating reports
of mutations in the swine flu virus, after half a dozen countries recorded
cases in which the virus was transforming.

French health officials say two people diagnosed with a slightly mutated swine flu virus that also has been found in other countries have died.

The Institute for Health Oversight said Friday that the two people, who have not been identified, had been hospitalized in different cities and died after being diagnosed with the variant swine flu.

Last week, the World Health Organization said it is investigating samples of variant swine flu linked to two deaths and one severe case in Norway, but that so far the significance of the mutation is unclear.

WHO says the same mutation has been found in both fatal and mild cases elsewhere, including in Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, Ukraine, and the United States.

Translation from francais to english:
French media say the mutation found is the same as in Norway and also that other victims have not caught the mutation and some media talk of a possible link with vaccination, but AC seems doubtful
