Ukraine's swine flu crisis

Ukraine's flu epidemic began at the end of October and over 1.4 million have fallen ill.

At least 78,000 people have been hospitalized and over 300 patients are still kept in intensive care.

All educational establishments in the capital Kiev were closed, and people were obliged to wear medical masks in all catering establishments, shops and social services facilities across the former Soviet republic.

I haven't seen this elsewhere. Maybe holidays

--------edit---
well, that's ARE. No flu-viruses during the first
part, so that's maybe RSV ?

maybe flu delayed it and now it's coming again,
while flu declines

gsgs,

I looked all over the euroflu site for a link to that Ukraine running graph showing the indents but can't find one. The link you gave doesn't appear to update.

Could you post a link to the most recent version?

Thanks

Bad weather cuts power to over 200 towns and villages in Ukraine
Today at 12:39 | Interfax-Ukraine
Heavy snow, rain and strong winds on January 8 damaged power supply lines and caused
electricity cuts in 218 towns and villages in four regions of Ukraine. Snowstorms blacked out 141 towns and
villages in Poltava region, 52 in Kharkiv region, sixteen in Kyiv region and nine in Luhansk region,
Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry's spokesman Ihor Kril said on Friday.
Emergency units at local power distribution companies are working to restore the power supply.
As of 0700 on January 8, the railway, road and air traffic resumed in full.
Brigades of Ukravtodor, the State Road Service of Ukraine, are clearing the roads.

Wide energy disrupture in cold weather is not good news.

Russian gas bill on time
Two days ago at 21:05 | Reuters Energy firm Naftogaz says Russian gas bill paid
KYIV - Ukraine paid in full and on time its last monthly bill of 2009 for Russian gas, state energy firm
Naftogaz said on Wednesday, referring to the steepest payment it had to make for that year worth almost $900 million.
Ukraine's late payments in previous years have caused rows with Moscow that a year ago lasted
three weeks and led to gas supply cuts to Europe, leaving millions out in the cold.

State Center for Innovative Biotechnologies opened in Kyiv
Two days ago at 17:49 | Interfax-Ukraine
"Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko took part in the opening of the State Center for Innovative
Biotechnologies on Wednesday. The center was opened on the basis of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine
of Ukraine's Academy of Agrarian Sciences, a correspondent of Interfax-Ukraine reported.

"One of the main directions of work of the State Center for Innovative Biotechnologies will be the creation
of medicines and vaccines that could be used to fight against various infectious diseases," Tymoshenko told
journalists at the opening of the center.

She also explained: "We're opening a special laboratory with European standards as part of this state
center of biotechnologies, where it will be possible to conduct all types of research without exception and
where it will be possible to produce scientific developments."

At the same time, the premier said that the center was not starting its work from the very beginning, as
some achievements, such as the medicine Leukozav, have already been made.

According to the creator of the medicine, Fellow of Ukraine's Academy of Agrarian Sciences Anatoliy
Zaviriukhin, Leukozav can be used to treat oncological diseases at various stages, as well as prevent them."

I wonder if genetic sequencing - particulary influeza virus sequences - is part of the agenda of the new Biotechnologies Center.
Same question about vaccine production capabilities.
