This is both scary and fascinating.

Is this the way it should have been handled here? I could never imagine it working, Americans being so individualistic and conspiratorial anyway.

In response to a growing swine flu epidemic, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, ordered closing of Ukraine's schools on Friday and banned public gatherings, including cinema shows, for three weeks.

"From today, all the school establishments in Ukraine -- be they private or public -- will be put on three weeks of holiday," she told her cabinet in comments carried on Ukrainian television.

Tymoshenko said the government would also be banning "all public gatherings, every concert and every cinema showing for three weeks".

The government would also introduce "special regimes" to limit the movement of Ukraine's citizens from one region to another for non-urgent purposes, she said.

The prime minister's tough actions came just hours after Ukraine confirmed its first death from the A(H1N1) virus, amid a growing panic over several dozen unexplained deaths in the west of the country.

Tymoshenko will travel to the affected western Ternopil region later Friday to visit the "epicentre" of the epidemic, a government statement said.

The country's politicians, including Tymoshenko, have just started official campaigning for presidential elections scheduled for January 17.

It looks more and more serious every hour. There is no more free places in hospitals. They are planning to use military medical forces and make a quarantine for the whole country. Poland-Ukraine border (EU border) is still open, but there is increased medical control there.

The recent reports make it clear that the outbreak is due to H1N1 swine flu. Some reports had indicated 10,000 were infected, and the number of fatalities seems to range from 30-70. It sounds like the country is shutting down for 3 weeks.
The true numbers are not very clear, but if the case fatality rate is near the 1% level, as suggested in some reports, this would be a VERY serious development.

Hopefully the CFR is closer to 0.1% if the following case counts (directly from official Ukranian Health Department) are accurate.

I cant find any reports suggesting 1% CFR. The highest one that can be concluded from the reports is 0.2%. Majority of these deaths occured because apparently people in Ukraine had no clue about H1N1 and thus didnt seek help early enough.
Also isn't what Ukraine doing exactly what majority of the people on this board hoped USA would do.

Also this is very important piece of information:

anyone who has been following the previous elections in Ukraine and political movements knows that the situation is quite a bit different there and this obviously is a great opportunity to show that you are strong leader who can lead the country through the tough times.

The big difference seems to be the attack rate. If this was repeated in say New York city there would be a quarter of a million people ill, many thousands in hospital with suspected swine flu and hundreds of deaths in the last week or so. That would likely trigger further action in the USA.

Reports yesterday suggested 70 had died and the entire country had 10,000 cases, but the deaths were concentrated in western Ukraine. The more recent reports raise the number of cases at the epicenter, which would lower the CFR.
