Person County illness
ROXBORO, N.C. (WNCN) – Nearly 1,000 students did not attend school in Person County Friday, but the absences are not all being connected to a recent “gastrointestinal illness” outbreak, officials said.

The schools had 79 percent attendance on Friday meaning that 980 students were not in attendance.

This comes one day after more than 650 students did not attend class.

Although the numbers jumped by more than 300 students, Person County Schools Superintendent Danny Holloman said there’s no way to attribute all the absences to sick students since this is a holiday weekend and some students may have already left for vacation. Some students may have stayed home as a precautionary measure as well, Holloman said.

Students at three schools, Person High School, Helena Elementary and Woodland Elementary, were affected by the illness beginning on Wednesday.

School officials in Person County said that more than 100 students and teachers went home or were out of school on Wednesday after the outbreak at the three schools.

Symptoms of the illness include diarrhea, vomiting, and a low grade fever which are similar to the symptoms of noro-virus, school officials said.

About 84 students at Person High and six teachers went home Wednesday with symptoms. Helena Elementary reported 17 absences and Woodland reported three people were sick.

Person County School Superintendent Danny Holloman said the county health department and the CDC were both notified about the outbreak.

The school district has asked students and staff with symptoms to stay home for at least 24 hours.

School officials also advised students and staff to wash their hands frequently with soap and water.

Person High School

ROXBORO, N.C. — The Person County Health Department on Friday said two cases of norovirus have been found among dozens of students and staffers who fell ill from a gastrointestinal outbreak Wednesday in Person County schools.

Health officials said more samples must test positive for the virus before it can be identified as the sole cause of the outbreak.

"The Health Department is continuing to contact sick individuals in an attempt to collect samples for testing," officials said in a statement.

Norovirus is highly contagious virus spread through fecal-contaminated food and water. It causes a few days of severe vomiting, diarrhea and stomach cramps.

The number of absences at Person County Schools grew to nearly 1,000 on Friday, two days after the outbreak was reported.

School officials said 988 students – or about 21 percent of the total student enrollment – did not report to class Friday. The figure does not represent the number of students who were symptomatic, and it may be higher than expected because of Labor Day weekend.

A total of 86 students from Person High School and 67 students from the other nine schools in the district experienced "virus-type symptoms" on Wednesday, Superintendent Danny Holloman said.

He described the symptoms as low-grade fever, diarrhea and vomiting, and urged students and teachers to wash their hands frequently using soap and water. The district used a bleach solution to clean each school Thursday, but many parents kept their students home as a precaution. There were 668 absences Thursday.

September 4, 2015 Media Release:
Person County Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreak Update (Roxboro, NC)
Since Wednesday, September 2, the Person County Health Department has been working closely with the Person County Schools, the North Carolina Division of Public Health, and the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health to determine the cause of gastrointestinal illness outbreak that first became apparent at Person High School.
The Health Department submitted the samples received to date. Two of the two samples tested at the State Laboratory of Public Health have returned positive for norovirus. While this is consistent with the type of illness reported, we need additional specimens to definitively confirm norovirus.
The Health Department is continuing to contact sick individuals in an attempt to collect samples for testing.
The Health Department encourages everyone to continue to be vigilant by hand washing with soap and warm water for 15 seconds. This is the most effective means of preventing the spread of viral illnesses.
An additional recommendation for those with gastrointestinal illnesses such as norovirus is to stay out of work or school until 48 hours after symptoms have resolved.
