Experts Urge Calm Amid MERS Crisis
Signs of a panic are emerging as the spread of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome show no signs of abating. But experts urged calm on Wednesday, noting that the sphere of infections remains restricted to those who were either treated in or visited hospitals that tended to MERS patients.

A doctor who works at a major general hospital in Seoul was confirmed to have been infected with the deadly virus when he came into contact with the nation's 14th MERS patient in the hospital where he works. This is the first tertiary infection of a physician.

Another Korean who arrived here from Saudi Arabia is displaying symptoms, including a high fever, and has been placed in isolation. The number of tertiary infections has risen to four, and the total number of confirmed cases has risen to 35.

Some 1,364 suspected MERS carriers have been placed in isolation, while 544 schools across the nation have closed temporarily

The MERS outbreak has entered a new phase. Anyone can become a victim and spread the virus to others, and anyone displaying symptons must wear a mask and report to health officials.

Medical experts have advised people displaying potential symptoms to avoid contact with others and to stay away from crowded places. Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable and have been advised to stay indoors for the time being.

South Korea reports 5 more cases of MERS, raising total to 35

South Korea's Health Ministry confirmed five additional cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) on Thursday, raising the total to 35, including two more health care workers who treated infected patients.
Aside from the health care workers, one of the new confirmed cases was in a person who had shared a hospital room with an infected patient and two were in people who had visited the ward at another institution where the country's first confirmed patient had been admitted, the ministry said.
The transmissions occurred before the existing patients were confirmed to be MERS positive, the ministry said. Three health care workers have previously been diagnosed as having MERS.

There have been two deaths directly confirmed as resulting from MERS, sharply raising public fear and confusion as authorities tried to contain the spread of the disease by tracking down people who may have had contact with patients.

All the cases have been traced to a 68-year-old man who had visited Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the countries with the most MERS cases.
While there has been no sustained human-to-human transmission, the worst-case scenario would be for the virus to change and spread rapidly, as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) did in 2002-2003, killing about 800 people around the world.
MERS was first identified in humans in 2012 and is caused by a coronavirus from the same family as the one that triggered SARS. But MERS has a much higher death rate at 38 percent, according to World Health Organization (WHO) figures.
The new cases would bring the total number globally to 1,179, based on World Health Organization (WHO) data, with at least 442 related deaths.
