The USDA is playing fast & loose with Fujian H5 wild bird time and space which is leading to media myths on wild bird roles in the spread of H5N2, H5N8, and H5N1 in the US lower 48 states.

The USDA is using an administrative flyway system that divides the US states into 4 flyways largely defined by state lines. This system is convenient for bookkeeping and assignment of state agencies, but ignores that significant overlap between the flyways in the US and Canada, as well as the overlap of the Pacific and Mississippi Flyways with East Asia / Australia Flyway, which facilitates the spread of Fujian H5 by wild birds.

Moreover, the USDA testing was limited to the Pacific Flyway on samples collected during hunting season, which ended in January. Samples collected in December and January are confirmed on a 2-3 month delay basis and the OIE updates cite the date for the start of the outbreaks as the confirmation date instead of the collection date to create the illusion that the steady stream of confirmations represent ongoing surveillance, when in fact the surveillance largely ended in January when the hunting season ended.

Surveillance of wild birds led to the identification of H5N8 in a Canada goose and an American wigeon in southwestern Oregon's Klamath County, according to a Mar 20 report that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) submitted to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The finding is the latest in a series of H5N8 detections in wild birds, backyard poultry, and commercial poultry in the western United States since December. The virus has surfaced in Washington, California, Idaho, and Nevada as well as Oregon.
