H5N3 avian flu virus found in Taiwan for the first time (update)

Taipei, Jan. 16 (CNA) A strain of avian influenza virus identified as H5N3 was detected Friday for the first time ever in Taiwan amid a widening investigation of the bird flu outbreak hitting poultry farms across the country, according to animal inspection authorities.

It is the first time that the H5N3 strain has been found in Taiwan, according to the Council of Agriculture's Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine.

Since the latest avian flu outbreak was first reported last week, three new strains, including variants of H5N2 and H5N8, have been discovered.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, 137 poultry farms had been inspected and samples had been collected for laboratory testing. The latest results showed that 101 of the farms were infected, with the H5N3 virus found at two of them, the bureau said.

All three newly found strains are all highly pathogenic, the bureau said.

H5N3 was found in samples from two goose farms in Kaohsiung and Pingtung, and it was apparently responsible for the deaths of all 53 geese at the latter.

Animal Health Research Institute Director-General Tsai Hsiang-jung (蔡向榮) said the new sub-type of H5N3 is the result of a virus recombination, just like the new variant of H5N2 found on Jan. 11.

The "H5" (hemagglutinin) of the local H5N3 sub-type is 99 percent the same as one seen in South Korea, while the "N3" (neuraminidase) is 98 percent similar to the H1N3 found in Thai ducks in 2011, the H2N3 found in Mongolian mallards in 2010, and the H5N3 find in wild ducks in Kaohsiung in 2013, Tsai said.

The N3 is also 97 percent the same as the H5N3 found in domestic ducks in Hualien in 2013, the expert added.

"It is certain the (new sub-type of) H5N3 detected in geese raised at farms was found in Taiwan for the first time," Tsai said, noting that he suspects the outbreak is not the first of its kind in the world but will have to check relevant data to be sure.

Like the new variant of H5N2 and the H5N8 now spreading across Taiwan, H5N3 is "highly pathogenic and deadly" for the birds.

National Chung Hsing University professor of veterinary medicine H.K. Shieh (謝快樂) said that as ducks and geese raised in open fields have been hit the hardest by the outbreaks, he believes the viruses are being spread by wild birds coming in contact with them.

He suggested the recombination that created the new sub-types might have happened in northern areas like Siberia and was brought to Taiwan instead of developing here.

While so far only ducks and geese have been killed by the avian flu virus strains, the outbreak would be deadly for chickens if it comes in contact with the largest domestic fowl group in Taiwan, Shieh warned.

According to Tsai, one chicken egg farm in Pingtung and another in Tainan have been confirmed infected with a previously known strain of H5N2, also highly pathogenic.

Another chicken farm in Changhua has been confirmed infected with an H5 subtype, but it will not be completely identified before Saturday, Tsai said.

A chicken farm in Miaoli, where 80 out of 15,080 chickens have died, may also be infected, Tsai said, noting that laboratory testing has taken place and it will take two weeks before results are known.

Of the 137 farms where samples have been collected for testing, 124 are goose farms. The farms are home to 424,641 geese, or 23.99 percent of all geese in Taiwan, according to the animal quarantine bureau.

As of Friday, the price for goose meat remained unchanged at NT$62 (US$1.96) per 600 grams despite the epidemic outbreak, the Council of Agriculture said.

Pingtung's wandan Township dyed new bird flu H5N3 goose farms, the County Government said today all 53 ducks have died, not sick goose out into the market.

Prevention and Quarantine Bureau goose farm in Pingtung's Wantan found H5N3 new virus, the County Government said, the goose farm, keeper of a total 53 goose, there have been deaths, the County Government sent 11th inspection 1 ducks and movement control, together with the owner and the other 1 more than 1900 birds geese also move control.

County Government said the 14th, there are 53 ducks died one after another, and sent plants made use of, not sick goose out into the market.

County Council pointed out that owners and 1 farm of more than 1900 is observed, is close by, but to date, no geese for signs of goose farms in the vicinity have no outward symptoms.

TAIPEI, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- A strain of bird flu identified as H5N3 was detected at two goose farms in southern Taiwan's Pingtung and Kaohsiung counties, the island's agriculture authorities said on Friday.

A goose farm in the far south of Pingtung was confirmed to have been hit by the H5N3 virus on Thursday, with all of its 2,000 geese dead. The virus was also found in another poultry farm in Kaohsiung, where 333 geese have been culled, agriculture authorities said in a statement.

It is the first time for the H5N3 strain to be detected in Taiwan. Three strains of bird flu virus, including variants of H5N2 and H5N8, have been confirmed since the avian flu outbreak was reported last week.

According to the statement, 36 more poultry farms in Taiwan were found to be infected with avian influenza as of 6 p.m. Thursday, bringing the total number of affected farms on the island to 101. Culling of poultry has been carried out on 44 farms.

Official statistics show that 39 of the farms had the H5N2 virus, while 23 were hit by the H5N8 virus, with the remaining 39 affected by the H5 strain of the bird flu virus.

The first case in the latest outbreak was confirmed on Jan. 9, when birds at a chicken farm in Pingtung were found to have been infected by the H5N2 virus.

A third highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza that is new to Taiwan was identified Friday as outbreaks of bird flu have spread to more poultry farms on the island, animal health authorities said Friday.

Chang Su-san, director general of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, told a press conference that birds on 101 goose, duck and chicken farms in northern, central and southern parts of the island have been confirmed to be infected with the H5N2, H5N8 or H5N3 subtypes of bird flu virus.

Tsai Hsiang-jung, director general of the Animal Health Research Institute under the Cabinet's Council of Agriculture, said DNA sequencing indicates it is a hybrid of an N3 strain responsible for the outbreaks Thailand in 2012, in Mongolia in 2010, and Kaohsiung last year, and an H5 strain responsible for outbreaks among poultry in South Korea last year.

The new strain - H5N3 - was found at two goose farms in Kaohsiung and Pingung, both in southern Taiwan, marking the first time for the strain to be identified in Taiwan.

The new H5N2 strain has so far only been found in Taiwan. DNA sequencing indicates it is a hybrid of an H5N2 strain that was responsible for outbreaks among poultry in South Korea last year and China in 2011.

Human transmission has not been reported.

As for the H5N8 subtype, the latest bird flu outbreaks mark the first time for it to be identified in Taiwan. Outbreaks among poultry were reported in Europe, South Korea, China and Japan last year. It is believed to pose little or no risk to humans.

Authorities indicated that the viruses may have been carried to Taiwan by migratory birds.

Taiwanese consume about 300 million chickens annually, 30 million ducks and 5.5 million geese, according to the Department of Animal Industry of the Council of Agriculture.

Animal health authorities have issued disease control measures in response to the outbreaks, with all poultry slaughter houses ordered to cease operations for two days to carry out sterilization. Operations resumed Wednesday.

Extensive testing of poultry within a 3-kilometer radius of the affected farms is in place and movement controls have been placed on poultry across the island.

Epidemiological comments Abnormal mortalities were observed in two goose farms in Kao-Hsiung City and Ping-Tung County. Local disease control center staff went to these farms to conduct movement restrictions and clinical inspection. Dead geese were taken to the National Laboratory (Animal Health Research Institute, AHRI) for diagnosis. Specific RNA of avian influenza virus was detected and subtyped as H5N3 by RT-PCR. Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed by the National Laboratory according to sequencing analysis of HA0 cleavage site. All the geese within the infected farms were destroyed or died. Thorough cleaning and disinfection will be conducted after stamping out operation. Surrounding poultry farms within 3 km radius of infected farms are under intensified surveillance for 3 months.
