Nobody is talking about whether the Southern Hemisphere is following the Northern or vice versa or neither; whether the decision as to which variety to include in the vaccination could be made closer to the time needed; or whether we could have two paths-one earlier such as for a selected H1N1 variety for the majority of healthy people aged 10-50 and a later selected H3N2 variety for the old and young health compromised individuals (a smaller subset of the population). The latter group are the ones who are dying in greatest numbers due to mismatched vaccines. The Aussie flu last year lasted 5 weeks longer than normal due to H3N2 Switzerland getting established. I expect based on that we could see a similar extension of the flu season in the U.S.
