CHP notified human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Shenzhen

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health (DH) is today (December 30) closely monitoring an additional human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Shenzhen notified by the Health and Family Planning Commission of Guangdong Province (GDHFPC), and again urged the public to maintain strict personal, food and environmental hygiene both locally and during travel.

According to the GDHFPC, the female patient aged 35 was hospitalised for management in critical condition. This is the first case in Shenzhen this winter.

To date, 455 human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) have been confirmed in the Mainland in Zhejiang (141 cases), Guangdong (112 cases), Jiangsu (59 cases), Shanghai (42 cases), Hunan (24 cases), Fujian (23 cases), Anhui (17 cases), Jiangxi (eight cases), Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (eight cases), Beijing (five cases), Shandong (five cases), Henan (four cases), Guangxi (three cases), Jilin (two cases), Guizhou (one case) and Hebei (one case).

"Locally, we will remain vigilant and work closely with the World Health Organization and relevant health authorities to monitor the latest developments," a spokesman for the DH remarked.

All boundary control points have implemented health surveillance measures. Thermal imaging systems are in place for body temperature checks of inbound travellers. Suspected cases will be immediately referred to public hospitals for follow-up. The DH's Port Health Office has enhanced body temperature checks by handheld devices.

Regarding health education for travellers, the display of posters and broadcasting of health messages in departure and arrival halls, environmental health inspection and provision of regular updates to the travel industry and other stakeholders will be enhanced.

Travellers, especially those returning from avian influenza-affected areas with fever or respiratory symptoms, should immediately wear masks, seek medical attention and reveal their travel history to doctors. Health-care professionals should pay special attention to patients who might have had contact with poultry, birds or their droppings in affected areas.

The public should remain vigilant and take heed of the advice against avian influenza below:

* Do not visit live poultry markets and farms. Avoid contact with poultry, birds and their droppings;
* If contact has been made, thoroughly wash hands with soap;
* Avoid entering areas where poultry may be slaughtered and contact with surfaces which might be contaminated by droppings of poultry or other animals;
* Poultry and eggs should be thoroughly cooked before eating;
* Wash hands frequently with soap, especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes, handling food or eating; after going to the toilet or touching public installations or equipment (including escalator handrails, elevator control panels and door knobs); and when hands are dirtied by respiratory secretions after coughing or sneezing;
* Cover the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing, hold the spit with a tissue and put it into a covered dustbin;
* Avoid crowded places and contact with fever patients; and
* Wear masks when respiratory symptoms develop or when taking care of fever patients.

A woman of 35 in Shenzhen is fighting for her life after contracting the deadly H7N9 strain of bird flu – the city’s first case since the last outbreak in May.

The latest confirmed infection comes only days after a 68-year-old Hong Kong woman was found to have fallen ill with the virus after visiting Shenzhen and eating cooked chicken. Officials said today the Hong Kong woman's condition remained “critical”.

Mainland Chinese authorities had previously reported 14 cases of H7N9 flu human infection, including five deaths.

Doctors said the woman in the latest case, identified only by her family name, Yang, was in “critical condition”.

The domestic helper living in the Longhua subdistrict of Shenzhen started to show early symptoms 10 days ago and visited a community hospital for treatment.

A week later she went to the Longhua branch of Shenzhen People’s Hospital and was tested for the H7N9 virus, China News Service reports.

Her family transferred her to another hospital after her condition worsened on Sunday – before the result of the test was revealed – and then admitted to another hospital in Guangzhou, the Guangzhou Respiratory Diseases Research Institute.

The positive test, carried out by officials from Shenzhen Disease Control and Prevention Centre, was later confirmed by a second test carried out by Guangdong Disease Control and Prevention Centre. By 6pm yesterday all the 28 people who had come in close contact with the woman had been put under medical observation.

The woman’s youngest daughter – the only one of the 28 who showed flu symptoms – has being taking the antiviral drug, Oseltamivir, as a precaution. A throat swab test is being carried out on the daughter but no result is yet known.

All the examination rooms, observation ward and in-patient ward where the patient stayed have been sterilised, along with the ambulance and car the woman’s family used to transfer her from Shenzhen to Guangzhou.

The health authority has also collected 15 samples from the area around the live poultry stalls of the Longsheng market. The result of tests on the samples is still being awaited.
