Birds Test Positive For Avian Flu In Southern Japan

TOKYO, Dec 16 (Bernama)-- The government of Miyazaki Prefecture in southern Japan said Tuesday three birds at a poultry farm in Nobeoka city have tested postive for a highly pathogenic H5 strain of avian influenza.

Sixteen chickens at the farm were reported dead on Monday with three testing positive for bird flu virus, Xinhua news agency reports.

Ten chickens died on Tuesday.

The local government has begun to cull some 4,000 chickens at the farm since early Tuesday.

Poultry farms have been advised to restrict movement of livestock, said Japan's Kyodo News Agency.

Miyazaki is Japan's largest producer of broiler chickens whose output accounts for around 20 percent of all chickens in the country.

4,000 chickens culled after bird flu confirmed in Japan

Tokyo (dpa) - Authorities culled about 4,000 chickens in south-western Japan early Tuesday after a highly pathogenic strain of H5 avian influenza was found in three birds, local media reported.

Miyazaki prefectural officials culled all the chickens at a farm in Nobeoka city, the country's top poultry producing region, in an operation that started at 2:30 am (1730 GMT Monday), the Kyodo News agency reported.

The local government told nearby poultry farms to restrict the movements of livestock.

Sixteen birds died at the farm on Monday, of which three tested positive for bird flu in preliminary tests, the report said.

The case was the country's first since April, when 110,000 chickens were culled in neighbouring Kumamoto prefecture after a bird flu case was detected there.

In 2011, about 1 million chickens were culled in Miyazaki prefecture as H5 avian influenza spread in the region.

Poultry culled and affected farms quarantined

Japan ordered the culling of about 4,000 chickens Tuesday following an outbreak of avian influenza at one of the country’s poultry farms.

The owner of the farm in the country’s southwest reported that 20 of his birds died suddenly over the weekend, following which a DNA test revealed the presence of the H5 strain of the bird flu virus, AFP reported.

The affected farm, located in the Miyazaki prefecture on Kyushu island, has been locked down along with several others surrounding it. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered “thorough measures for epidemic prevention” in what is the country’s first confirmed bird flu outbreak since April.
