Madrid (AFP) - An elderly Spanish priest infected with Ebola died in a Madrid hospital on Tuesday, five days after being evacuated from Liberia, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The 75-year-old Roman Catholic priest, Miguel Pajares, was being treated in Spain with an experimental US serum, ZMapp, after being flown to Madrid on August 7.

He contracted Ebola at the Saint Joseph Hospital in the Liberian capital Monrovia where he worked with patients suffering from the disease.

"It is confirmed. He died at 9:28 am," said a spokeswoman for Spain's La Paz-Carlos III hospital.

The priest had been treated with ZMapp, she said.

The medicine arrived at Madrid's La Paz-Carlos III hospital on Saturday after Spain's drug safety agency exceptionally cleared its import to treat the deadly disease.

Ebola has now claimed four lives in 10 days among the staff of the same Saint Joseph Hospital in Monrovia, which has since been shuttered.

The hospital is run by the Juan Ciudad ONGD charity, which was established by a Spanish Roman Catholic order, the Hospitaller Brothers of St. John of God.

The religious order issued a statement confirming the priest's death.

It thanked the government and people for their support, highlighting the "good work" by hospital staff who treated the priest.

The Roman Catholic order said it would not be making further comment.

A Spanish missionary who contracted the Ebola virus while working in West Africa has died in hospital in Madrid.

More than 1,000 people have died in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria since the outbreak was first reported in February.

Miguel Pajares, 75, was airlifted back to Spain from Liberia last week with a nun who tested negative for the virus.

For the past few days he had been treated with an untested, experimental drug, Zmapp.

A World Health Organization (WHO) panel in Geneva has meanwhile approved the ethics of using ZMapp.

According to the Reuters news agency, the panel said it was ethical to combat the Ebola outbreak by offering drugs or vaccines whose side-effects and efficacy had yet to be proven.

The priest was part of a Catholic order at St Joseph's hospital in the Liberian capital, Monrovia.

The hospital has now been closed because of the outbreak.

A Congolese nun died there on Saturday, days after its director, Patrick Nshamdze, also died.

Priest infected with Ebola dies
WHO: Virus has infected 1,848 people and killed 1,013

UPDATED 5:42 AM EDT Aug 12, 2014

(CNN) —As the death toll from the Ebola epidemic soars over 1,000, a team of medical experts say it is ethical to offer medications to fight the virus even if a drug's effectiveness or its adverse effects are unknown.

"The large number of people affected by the 2014 west Africa outbreak, and the high case-fatality rate, have prompted calls to use investigational medical interventions to try to save the lives of patients and to curb the epidemic," the World Health Organization said Tuesday.

WHO said it believes the virus has infected 1,848 people and killed 1,013 -- making this the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.

The desperation has pushed Liberia's government to ask for scarce quantities of an untested drug from a U.S.-based company.

The Food and Drug Administration approved Liberia's request for access to ZMapp, and sample doses of the medicine will be sent to Liberia this week to treat doctors who have contracted Ebola, the Liberian government said.

The drug's manufacturer, Mapp Biopharmaceutical, said its supply was exhausted after fulfilling the request of a West African country.

ZMapp made international headlines after two American aid workers infected with Ebola in Liberia took the serum -- and their conditions apparently improved.

But a Spanish priest who was infected Ebola in Liberia and started taking ZMapp died Tuesday morning.

Spain's Ministry of Heath said Saturday that Miguel Pajares was being treated with ZMapp at a Madrid hospital. The hospital confirmed Pajares' death Tuesday.

Ebola: Spanish missionary dies of disease after being flown to Madrid
Officials say Miguel Pajares, who contracted virus in Liberia, has died after being repatriated for treatment

The Spanish missionary who contracted the Ebola virus in Liberia and was repatriated to Spain for treatment has died from the virus, health officials in Spain said on Tuesday morning.

Miguel Pajares, 75, arrived in the Spanish capital last Thursday on a plane sent from Spain to Liberia, making him the first patient in the deadly outbreak to be evacuated to Europe for treatment.

Doctors said he was weakened and feverish but in a stable condition. He was taken to Madrid's Carlos III hospital where he was due to receive the experimental treatment ZMapp. A spokesperson from the hospital said he had died on Tuesday morning but would not confirm whether he had actually received the experimental treatment.

Pajares succumbed to the virus just as Liberia announced that it would be receiving doses of an experimental drug, believed to be ZMapp, to give to two doctors who tested positive for Ebola, making them the first Africans to receive the treatment in the fast-spreading outbreak.

The World Health Organisation said on Tuesday it backed the use of the experimental drug to treat Ebola.

The news came amid growing outrage that the drug had only been made available to two Americans and Pajares – all westerners who had been repatriated to their home countries for treatment.

In a statement, the California-based manufacturer of ZMapp, Mapp Biopharmaceutical, said it had run out of treatment after responding to a request from an unidentified west African country.

Pajares was one of three missionaries to test positive for the virus at the San José de Monrovia hospital in Liberia. All three had been helping to treat people infected with Ebola as part of their work with the San Juan de Dios hospital order, a Catholic humanitarian organisation that runs hospitals around the world. The two other missionaries, from Ghana and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, who were not evacuated, have also died in recent days from the virus.

Pajares arrived in Spain with Juliana Bohi, a nun born in Equatorial Guinea who holds Spanish nationality, who tested negative for the virus.

Dr. Niman,
I understand the incubation period to be 2 -21 days. The priest died on August 12. Assuming the HCW was infected as late as the day he passed, (and assuming he was the source of infection) are we not long past the 21 day period for symptoms to show?
Thank you.

The priest described in this thread would not be a source for the current infections in Spain. However, there were TWO priests evacuated to Spain, one from Liberia in August and another from Sierra Leone in September. Although the latter was the source for the current case(s), both priest were affiliate with the same missionary organization, went to the same hospital, and died.

The case in this thread was evacuated when he was near death. He died shortly after getting the first of three doses of ZMAPP. The remaining two doses were sent to the UK, where the HCW recovered after getting treated.

The second priest was not treated with an experimental drug.

The first priest was part of a large outbreak leading to he closing of the hospital in Liberia. This cluster was linked to Patrick Sawyer's sister, who infected the hospital director who infected many missionaries and doctors at the hospital in Monrovia, raising serious infection control issues.

The current case(s) in Madrid also involves serious infection control issues.
