69-year old Brother Manuel García Viejo, the medical director of the San Juan De Dios Hospital in the city of Lunsar, Sierra Leone, has expressed a wish to be repatriated to Spain.

In a statement on its website, the Juan Ciudad Foundation said that Brother García Viejo was being cared for at an Ebola unit in Freetown, and thanked the Spanish government for its help.

The note said Brother García Viejo was a specialist in internal and tropical medicine, and had belonged to the Hospital Order of Saint John of God for the past 52 years.

He has worked in Africa for 30 years and has been the medical director of the order’s hospital in Lunsar for the past 12 years.

Mr. García Viejo will be admitted to the infectious diseases ward of the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid.

El País reported that Spain’s Health Minister, Ana Mato, is this evening meeting with staff from the Spanish Foreign Office and Ministry of Defence in order to organise the repatriation.

In its latest figures, America’s Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported that Sierra Leone now has a total of 1673 cases and 562 deaths from Ebola.

The government of Sierra Leone this week announced a three-day lock down of the capital Freetown, in an attempt to stop the spread of the disease.

At the beginning of August, Brother Miguel Pajares, a 75-year-old priest who worked for the same foundation in Liberia, also tested positive for Ebola and was repatriated by military aircraft to a specially-prepared wing at the Carlos III Hospital in Madrid, after saying he fetl “abandoned” in Liberia and 73,000 signed an online petition for his return.

Brother Pajares was the first Spaniard to be infected with Ebola, he received the experimental ZMapp treatment, but he died at 9:30 a.m. on August 12. He had caught the disease whilst looking after the director of his hospital in Liberia, Brother Patrick Nshamdze, who died on August 3.

MADRID (AP) — Doctors treating a Spanish priest who was repatriated from West Africa on Monday after being diagnosed with the Ebola virus said there were no samples of experimental drug ZMapp available in the world right now, and they were considering alternative treatments.

The priest, Manuel Garcia Viejo, 69, was in serious condition and was suffering from dehydration, with kidney and liver complications, said Javier Rodriguez, chief health officer for the Madrid region.

Garcia Viejo, a medical director of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Lunsar, Sierra Leone, was transferred to Madrid Carlos III hospital after being flown back from Sierra Leone in a medically-equipped military plane.

Mapp Biopharmaceutical, the company that makes ZMapp, says the drug's supplies are exhausted and that it takes months to make even a small batch.

With ZMapp unavailable, the hospital was looking into alternative medicines or the possibility of using blood serum from a cured patient, said Dr. Jose Ramon Arribas, of the Carlos III hospital.

Garcia Viejo is the second Spanish missionary to catch Ebola. Another priest, Miguel Pajares, 75, was flown back to Spain from Liberia on Aug. 7. Pajares began treatment with ZMapp, but died Aug. 12.

Ebola is blamed for the deaths of more than 2,600 people in West Africa.

The Health Ministry said Garcia Viejo asked to be transferred back to Spain after testing positive for the deadly virus.
