An imported case , in which all these measures have been established, no risk to public health.

New coronavirus

The call and the Middle East respiratory coronavirus (MERS-CoV) was identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia . Most people affected by this respiratory virus acute respiratory disease presents with fever, cough and difficulty breathing. A substantial proportion of patients have developed renal failure in the course of the disease. However, this coronavirus infection does not always produce symptoms. In fact, since June 2013, 16 cases have been confirmed asymptomatic, five of them in health care workers, which could mean that there may be more affected than were not detected.

The MERS-CoV belongs to the same family as the SARS virus, coronaviruses, and also has the same capacity as its predecessor to generate pneumonia and respiratory failure. However, recent data suggest that the differences infection presented with respect to first and second pattern generating a different disease. Unlike SARS-CoV MERS does not affect healthy young people, but the majority (96%) is about patients with any type of pathology prior.

To date there have been reported 63 deaths and 150 confirmed cases , 125 of them in Saudi Arabia. All cases have originated in five Middle Eastern countries (Saudi Arabia, Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Oman). In Europe there have been cases, all imported from this area either by medical transfers from there or because they were secondary a trip to these countries or by intimate contact with an affected, in four countries: United Kingdom (two cases), Germany (two cases), France (a case) and Italy (one case).

Health officials do not rule out more cases that may arise in the health centers of the EU as a result of patients who become infected during the visit to the affected area or shipments of infected patients MERS-CoV. The incubation period of this infection is 14 days.

People who have been in contact with an infected person should be observed during the two weeks after exposure to monitor the possible occurrence of respiratory symptoms. Besides epidemiological data is collected and a blood sample in the first seven days will be sent to the National Center for Microbiology, Institute of Health Carlos III. If still asymptomatic, they will collect a second serum sample at 21 days.

Although at first talked of camels as the possible source of the virus, a study recently published in the journal Nature says the bats as the true reservoir of a virus very similar to MERS that is able to jump between species and human-bat pass without having to have an intermediate carrier.

MADRID: Spain said Wednesday that a woman who just returned from Saudi Arabia has been infected by the MERS coronavirus in the country's first case of the deadly disease.

The patient, who was born in Morocco but lives in Spain, is receiving treatment at a Madrid hospital and is in a "stable" condition, the health ministry said in a statement.

She had spent October in Saudi Arabia, where the disease first appeared in September 2012, it added.

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has so far claimed 64 lives worldwide, with the greatest number of deaths in Saudi Arabia, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The WHO said Monday there were a total of 150 laboratory-confirmed cases of the respiratory disease worldwide.

The disease has so far been detected in only four other European nations -- Britain, Germany, France and Italy -- always among people who had recently travelled to the Middle East.

Experts are struggling to understand MERS, for which there is no vaccine.

It is considered a deadlier but less-transmissible cousin of the SARS virus that erupted in Asia in 2003 and infected 8,273 people, nine percent of whom died.

Like SARS, MERS appears to cause a lung infection, with patients suffering from a temperature, cough and breathing difficulty.

But it differs in that it also causes rapid kidney failure and the extremely high death rate has caused serious concern.

In August, researchers pointed to Arabian camels as possible hosts of the virus. (AFP)

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's Health Ministry reported the country's first case of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus on Wednesday in a woman recently arrived from a trip to Saudi Arabia.

The virus has already been reported in four other European countries, the ministry said.

The latest patient, resident in Spain and born in Morocco, was checked in to a Madrid hospital on November 1 and is in a stable condition, posing no risk to public health, the ministry's statement said.

There have been 150 confirmed cases of the MERS virus worldwide, with 125 in Saudi Arabia. In Europe, two cases have been reported in Britain, two in Germany, one in France and another in Italy, the ministry said.

The virus, which is from the same family as the one that caused a deadly outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2002, is thought to have originated in bats.

One study published in August found strong evidence that it is widespread among dromedary camels in the Middle East.
