Here's the primary source the news piece is citing. It gives more details:

Although the report is dated tomorrow, it is OLD news. The cases were largely in the north in the spring and at the end of the school year. Now the virus is running through the schools and the deaths in the south are piling up (because they started in school in early August).

Here is the distribution of cases in above report

† Arizona (six cases), California (three), Connecticut (one), Florida (one) , Illinois (two), Massachusetts (one), Minnesota (two), New Jersey (three), New York (four), New York City (four), Oregon (one), Rhode Island (one), Texas (two), Utah (three), and Wisconsin (two).

CDC analyzed data from April to August 2009. The results of that analysis indicated that, of 36 children who died,
7 (19%) were aged <5 years
24 (67%) had one or more of the high-risk medical conditions.
[22 (92%) of the 24 children with high-risk medical conditions had neurodevelopmental conditions].

My feeling is that if I wouldn't want to take chances with my high-risk child, then I wouldn't want to take chances with my "normal" child either.
[What do you do if you have one of each?]

I do, and I worry about them both for different reasons. My 3 year old is the one with cystic fibrosis. Too young to worry about cytokine storm, really, but CF and bacterial coinfection go hand-in-hand. Ad to that she had (and may still have) a staph colonization in her throat I am extremely worried it could get to her lungs if she comes down with flu and the tamiflu we have is ineffective (remember, 40% of swine flu in Texas is resistant :P) . As for my 6 year old, she has always been in perfect health, only the most common childhood illnesses. I am concerned that at age 6 she may just have a robust enough immune system that the chance of cytokine storm starts to increase. Unfortunately the CDC has put us in quite a difficult spot with their horrid guidelines and losing 1 income is not an option.

Yup, I know. Better late than never, I guess. Haven't been very impressed with the CDC's ability to get timely information out to everyone.

MMWR and FluView are taken in part from data collected by the states and sent to the CDC, correct? So why does the CDC release these things 2 weeks late and then the states, which supply a lot of the data, can't get theirs out until the following week, if we are lucky? (Are you listening, Texas DSHS?)

The timing of the CDC report is NOT an accident. There have been 12 pediatic deaths in the past 2 weeks. The trick is to get the report out BEFORE the school year gets going and the bodies start piling up.
