GWU reports spike in student pneumonia cases

George Washington University has seen a spike in pneumonia cases among students, with 46 cases reported this fall.

Most cases “have been mild to moderate and have resolved within 7-10 days” with antibiotics, the school said in a release.

University officials portrayed the incident not as an outbreak but as a “higher than usual incidence” of the respiratory ailment. “Every few years these situations happen in university settings,” the school said.

The District of Columbia Department of Health is assisting.

GW has launched a public education campaign, including a story in the campus-wide publication George Washington Today and posters in public areas advising hand-washing and other preventive measures.

“As an additional preventative measure, the university has undertaken additional cleaning of high-traffic areas,” the school said.
