The death of a 13-year-old Breckenridge boy Wednesday may have been connected with swine flu infection.

Bryan Pineda, 13, was found unconscious at his home Wednesday and later died at Breckenridge Medical Center.

On Friday he tested positive for Type A flu, and “currently 99 percent of positive Type A flu tests are thought to be 2009 H1N1 (swine) influenza,” according to a joint statement from Summit County Public Health and Coroner Joanne Richardson.

To date, nobody in Summit County had tested positive for swine flu. But because seasonal flu doesn't tend to hit until November or December — and H1N1 tests are prohibitively expensive ($298 per person) — health officials are assuming positive flu tests to be swine flu. Only people who are hospitalized are tested for H1N1.

An autopsy is to be performed Thursday, though immediate results are unlikely to suggest cause of death.

“The district is devastated at this loss, and our hearts go out to the family of this young man,” Summit School District superintendent Millie Hamner said.

Public health officials this week reported 11.5 percent of local students missing class because of illness. About 6 percent reported flu symptoms while 5 percent reported symptoms involving sore throat and gastrointestinal problems — both of which have been reportedly connected with swine flu.

Summit High School principal Drew Adkins said 105 students missed school Tuesday due to illness, with 46 reporting flu symptoms. That's nearly 13 percent of the student body.

SHS athletic director Amy Raymond said in an e-mail that a gymnastics competition on Wednesday was canceled because six of seven team members were at home with the flu.

It seems that the 46 students with "flu symptoms" do not include those with sore throat and gastrointestinal problems, which is likely associated with most of the 59 absent students without "flu symptoms".

Moreover, in addition the the 13% absent, a similar number may be infected, but in school because they have no fever and symptoms are limited to sore throat and headache.
Thus, 1/4 of the school population (over 200 students) may be H1N1 infected.

A local private school is closing its doors this week after hundreds of students have not shown up to school.

Laurence Manning Academy announced Tuesday that the school will close its doors until Monday.

The headmaster of the school told News19 that there are no confirmed cases of Swine Flu. It's estimated that 200 kids missed class Monday, and 280 were out of class Tuesday.

About 1,000 students attend the private school.

All athletic and extra-curricular events for the week are cancelled.

The varsity football game originally scheduled for Friday, September 25 will be re-scheduled for Monday, September 28th at 7:00 p.m.

An 11-year-old Sumter girl who had flu-like symptoms early this week died Wednesday in an ambulance en route to Columbia, authorities said.

Ashley Pipkin was a fifth-grade student at Laurence Manning Academy in Manning. Family members said Pipkin began to feel bad Monday with flu-like symptoms. She took a codeine-based cough medicine and began having trouble breathing Tuesday.

Doctors at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter diagnosed Ashley with pneumonia on Tuesday, family members said. She was being transported to Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia when she died Wednesday.

The autopsy will determine whether Ashley had swine flu and whether it contributed to her death. If so, she would be at least the second child whose death was associated with the H1N1 virus in South Carolina.

John H. McCormick, 12, of Batesburg-Leesville died Aug. 24 after contracting swine flu, according to his family. John had cerebral palsy and other lifelong health problems.

Ashley's family said she was a healthy, active child who played softball.

A 11-year-old Sumter girl who attended Laurence Manning Academy has died.

Ashlie Pipkin's family says she died while riding in an ambulance headed to Palmetto Health Richland hospital in Columbia around 2pm Wednesday.

Pipkin may have died of pneumonia from flu-like symptoms she had been suffering from. Pipkin's family adds Ashlie had already visited Tuomey Medical Center in Sumter twice for the same issues.

Ashley's mom, Brandi, says the 5th grader felt fine last Friday and didn't feel any symptoms until Monday when she woke up sick.

Brandi says Ashlie was diagnosed with the flu on Monday and was given Robitussin with codeine. She believes Ashlie had a bad reaction to the codeine on Tuesday because she woke up with red welts all over her body.

Doctors at Tuomey then diagnosed her with pneumonia in her left lung, but it began to creep over to her right lung.

Ashlie's family is obviously very shocked and saddened by her death. They described her as athletic and energetic.

"This is very serious," said Ashlie's cousin, Selena Moore. "For Ashlie to be as healthy as she was and this just hit her Monday and here it is Wednesday we're mourning her death. Please, any onset of any symptoms, please go to your doctor, go to the emergency room and be seen."

Laurence Manning Academy Headmaster Spencer Jordan shut the school down on Tuesday after nearly 300 students stayed home sick. He couldn't imagine the situation would lead to death.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to Ashlie's family," said Jordan.

Pipkin's also says that every time Ashlie got sick that she had trouble breathing, so officials are looking into that further.
