Twenty-three Egyptians have recently been infected with H1N1 virus, bringing the number of cases of swine flu in Egypt recorded more than 700, said yesterday the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, quoted by state news agency Mena .
Of the 703 patients, 559 were cured. The others are hospitalized and are in a state of "stable," said Abderrahmane Chahine.

Panic swept through Zamalek after 13 of the club's swimmers were found to have caught swine flu during their participation in the districts' competition hosted last week by Ahli Club in Nasr City. Around 600 swimmers participated in the event but H1N1 appeared to strike only Zamalek athletes.

"It is obvious that a Zamalek swimmer became infected before the tournament began and he got in contact with his teammates in the dressing room and the bus that was driving them to the event," Gamal Salaheddin, Ahli's team doctor, said.

...Some Zamalek parents said they had been complaining that their children were suffering from fever but that no one listened until it spread on the team.

Several clubs suspended swimming practice, sending an official letter to the Ministry of Health seeking to know how effective was water as a medium for the transmission of swine flu.

I suspect this is H1N1 co-infections (swine and seasonal).

More than 700 cases of swine flu have been reported since June. Most recently, the average number of new cases per week has climbed from 90 to 105.

Swine flu in Egypt has stolen the headlines from the increasing number of H5N1 avian flu victims despite the fact that health authorities consider bird flu to pose the greater danger.

Sporting clubs are the latest focus of public attention after it was reported that 26 members of the Zamalek Club's young swimming team, together with four of their mothers, had been confirmed to be infected with swine flu.

Abdel-Rahman Shahin, official spokesman at the Ministry of Health, stresses that despite the growing number of confirmed cases of swine flu they represent a tiny fraction of Egypt's population of 80 million. "At the moment the virus is very mild and can be treated with an aspirin and a few days of bed rest," says Shahin. "We will not buy a vaccine that costs the country millions of dollars unless it is needed."

"We are expecting more swine flu cases, especially after the end of the omra season and the beginning of the hajj. Egypt's hospitals cannot accommodate such numbers," says Shahin. Accordingly, only patients under five years of age or of 65 and above will be admitted to hospital. "Pregnant women and those with medical conditions such as asthma, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes will also be hospitalised in order to avoid complications," Shahin added.
