College bars visitors due to flu illness
2010/07/28

ALOR STAR: Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Pendang is now off- limits to all visitors.
It had been temporarily "closed" even to parents after 34 students at the school were down with influenza-like-illness (ILI) last Thursday.

Kedah Mara director Ahmad Rakhli Hassan said the college's management had opted to temporarily close the junior college to contain the virus from spreading to outsiders.

"All boarders at the school have also been provided with a face mask each.

"We will work closely with the health department to monitor students who were affected with ILI symptoms," he said, adding there were no new cases at the school.

Ahmad Rakhli, however, could not furnish details on the total number of boarders at the school.

It was reported that 34 students at the school were quarantined in their dorms after they developed ILI symptoms last week.

Doctors keeping tabs on the students said their condition was returning to normal.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A school in Malaysia has been temporarily closed on Wednesday after 166 students developed symptoms of the A/H1N1 flu.

The students were found to have sore throats and coughs Wednesday morning, and were asked to receive medical treatment and rest at home, reported China Press, a local Chinese Daily.

According to the newspaper, the secondary school ordered all co- curricular activities to be stopped, but changed its decision later at noon to close the school for the rest of the day.

The school was quoted as saying that two teachers from the school had been hospitalized. While the daughter of one of the teachers was said to have been tested positive for A/H1N1, the saying was yet to be confirmed.

The daily also reported that a form four student from the school, who had earlier returned from an overseas trip, died on her way to the hospital after she fainted at school recently.

However, the brother of the deceased clarified that his sister had succumbed to bacterial lung infection.

Malaysian Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai had earlier assured members of the public that the fatal disease was well controlled, and was not spreading.

There was also no indication that the second wave of A/H1N1 flu was imminent in the country, added Liow.

Follow up to yesterday's posting...the young girl that died had H1N1 but no fever

http://www.mysinchew.com/node/54136

KUALA LUMPUR, Thursday 3 March 2011 (Bernama) - A form four school student in Kajang is among three people who died from H1N1 this year, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

The girl who had symptoms of vomiting, headache and cough for a week but no fever was taken to a private hospital on Feb 22 when she fainted (syncope) after jogging.

She was then referred to Institute of Respiratory Medicine, Kuala Lumpur and then to Kuala Lumpur Hospital where she died on Feb 24.

"PCR tests confirmed that the virus on Feb 25 was H1N1 positive," he said in a press statement here today.

Hulu Langat District Health Office probed the victim's school on March 1 and found that 15 of her 42 classmates had symptoms of cough or cold, while eight teachers screened had no influenza-like illness (ILI).

Liow said control measures had been taken including health education like washing hands and ethics when coughing.

Students and school staff with symptoms are advised not to come to school and seek treatment from health facilities.

The minister yesterday said the school principal reported that two teachers were on sick leave due to fever, cough and flu while 149 of 1,600 students in the morning session were absent.

"Given the high rate of absenteeism, the school management decided to close the school (yesterday)," he said.

School principals and headmasters were reminded to abide by guidelines for the management of H1N1 in schools as cases often occur in clusters

The number of confirmed H1N1 cases from Jan 1 until yesterday stood at 679.
